Surely this jus proves why a "set spec" works far better with gaming than having a completely open market? Doom = made for GForce so does better on that, HL2 made for ATi so will more than likely work better on that.

Doom III is an OpenGL game, nvidia runs OpenGl better than ATI's cards on it's current drivers. Half Life 2 is a Direct X game, ATI runs DirectX better than Nvidia. Its not because Doom is being specifically coded for Nvidia hardware. Half Life 2 also has special code paths for nvidia to run better, but ATI still out performs them.

Those benchmarks are pretty disappointing anyway. Hardly 1% of PC owners have
the latest hardware, even if you do, those figures suggest you'd be lucky for a steady
60fps, call be sun of satan greedy monkey, but I much prefer 100fps+ when it
comes to PC gaming because of the higher resolution requiring more inbetween
frames to achieve what consoles achieve at 60fps.
I guess in a way if a game cannot be run in maximum detail until years later,
it's something to look forward to, like when Microsoft released Asherons Call 2,
they included a 3rd CD with Very High detail graphics as a provision for future
graphics cards; which was nice of them.

There are plenty of benchmarks highlighting that ATI run DX9 games faster than the 6800 though.
I've bought a 6800GT until ATI fix their Open GL drivers, I have no doubt that ATI will plug the gap, I'll then pick up the 512M version of whatever ATI have put out assuming that the gap has been plugged of course. The number of games that will use this new doom engine will be high.
Check out PC Worlds new component website, its surprisingly good if a little bit more pricey www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk

Neil, is it true the 6800 needs a fan bought with it to ensure it doesn't overheat in most PCs? I read this mentioned in a early comparison against the x800XT which kind of put me off the 6800, but I'm on the verge of changing my mind if the card'll work without me having to modify it or buy a number of extras to ensure it works okay.

Concept,
No thats not true.
The 6800 comes with fans built in that do what is required. The Ultra comes with a huge thing clamped on it that needs two slots. Shuttle unfortunately put the AGP slot near the edge of the case so the dual slot 6800 cards won't fit. One of the things I liked about my 9800XT from Sapphire is that they put a larger fan on it that runs quieter.
When a clear view of what card is the better choice is known I'll probably upgrade to PCI Express at the same time.

Thanks for the info.
I'm tempted by the 6800 now after seeing it completely demolish the x800 in the pre-release Doom III benchmark.
But I suppose I'll probably end up doing the same thing. Wait a while until it becomes clear which card has the cutting edge. I only know one thing though. There's no way on Earth I'll be picking up Half-Life 2 on launch without a graphics card that can do it justice.

Didn't they develop the game on 9800-based hardware?

Might be worth chucking your fave linux flavour on a spare disk, just in case.
I bet that if the benchmarls show a 10% improvement on Linux, loads of folk will put a Linux install down, just for fun!
