2Qs: GC Boot and Tales of Symphonia

    Hiya
    Two questions:

    1. GC Boot-up
I?ve had my Gamecube for a couple of years now and everything?s been smooth and nice with it. However, just recently I?m hearing strange sounds when booting up the system. It won?t start unless the lid is closed (it happens only right after that, or when the power button is pushed, and then no more during playtime) and it sounds like a small motor, which most likely gets us the laser motor, right? It seems as if it?s going two distances and then starts reading the disc. Usually the laser only goes small distances and make small pitched sounds, but this is more like a long murmur. Heh, maybe I?m paranoid, but I?m pretty sure I haven?t heard it before.. Should I worry?

    2. Tales
Just checking if someone else has noticed any bugs with the text in Tales of Symphonia. I?ve had two or three times when I haven?t been able to manually close a text box and once or twice the text box has closed automatically before I had a chance reading it all through ^_^;.

    Your source of irrelevant questions,
    Jon

Sounds like you need a new GC, if it doesn't start when the lid aint closed there's problems already mate.

TOS, I think theres points in the game where characters are speaking and you can't close out boxes, you have to let the conversation run its course, unless your in the field and get a pop up convo, you can skip them by pressing start. Closing automatically though, I reckon your speeding the text up by holding down your button, but maybe hitting it again and skipping text. Perhaps.

Yeah, sounds like the laser is having trouble finding the start of the disk. The drive is probably on it's way out.

In a related question, my Gamecube has sometimes been making "clunking" noises when loading disks, like it's manhadling the disks themselves. Add this to the fact that there is now quite a large mark going from the inside to the outside of the disk on WE:FE (a disk I take a load of care with) and i'm a bit concerned. Is my Gamecube assaulting my games? Do I get another?

No no, what I meant was that the sound won?t start until the lid has been closed and the laser starts looking for the game data. Before there was only the humming of the fan that could be heard, but now the laser has started to make new sounds.

As for TOS, I need not touch a button before the text skips. In the very beginning (for example) Raine is mentioning that the class has been discussing some topic, but the first time I played that scene through I only got to "We?ve been discussing this in cla..." (or something like that). This means one or more text lines skipped as the text box closed. Maybe I should ask Dvd Box Office for a return..

There is a sound as the lens tracks - it's nothing to worry about. There is a scratchy sound as the drive initializes as well as the spindle motor sound.

The reason it doesnt make a sound when the lid is open is because the motors are not in motion, consoles have a safety feature where the drive is not supplied power if the lid is open (stops people looking into the lens or touching the disk as it spins)

The TOS issue you mention seems like a another Freeloader quirk, not a problem with your TOS disk.

That sheds a whole new light on it! Only thing I can suggest to eliminate possibilities is to try another copy if it isnt too much hassle getting one to try.
