    Morrowind : GOTY

    Hi,

Just got Morrowind:GOTY edition for Xbox (14.99 from Amazon, bargain!) and before I start it, I figured as I've heard so much about it being big and sprawling, open-ended with a clumsy combat system, I'd ask for some newbie advice on what to do or not do.

I reckon I've picked my character race: dark elf, as they seem like good all-rounders that are a touch on the dark side.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

I personally found this game slow and hard to get into. Ifyou end up enjoying this please let me know how, cos i wouldnt mind getting into this properly.

One tip - what what you say to peeps as if affects their trust in you and it is a torturous effort to get them to like you again!

Also, teal everythingyou can then sell it off for moo-lah.........

A very long winded game, i tell you.

Made use of the bargainous nature of Amazon for this game too! I had the original on PC, but lost interest mainly due to my then PC being WAY behind the standard needed to run the game to a decent standard.

Anyway, I've not started up either myself, but seems that there's a lot of beginners guides and suchlike over at gamefaqs.com so they might be worth a read through before loading up your first attempt.

I got fed up of this on Xbox within 5 minutes of playing this supposedly "bug-fixed" version: I got stuck against the hatch when you have to emerge from below deck.

The forums here http://www.elderscrolls.com/index.php have been very helpful to me,also here http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/index.asp

Any pointers? To be honest,it's difficult to know where to begin.Depends how you want to play the game - although be warned morrowind is rather biased toward magic users rather than melee - dont neglect enchant/intelligence.Although,if these are really exploited, you can easily become uber-powerful very quickly and all the challenge will be lost. The game is MUCH more fun (although equally frustrating at times) if you role-play rather than power play.I would advise against taking advantage of the many cheats and explotations available and just take it as it comes.Just dont forget to save - a lot.

Also, dont forget that when you kill a NPC they stay dead - and there is no indication whether they may have been a key player in one of the many side-quests which would then be unavailable to you so be careful who you kill.If the person is essential to the main plot though the game will indicate this and (as I recall) will prompt you to return to an earlier save.

Adore Morrowind GOTY. God knows how many hours I've played in total. And I'm not generally an RPG man.

Be sure to read this thread here in which a bunch of us talked about it not long after release.

Basically, the stats system rewards repetition. Fight a lot of easy targets when you get the chance (all the way down to rats) to build your skill with whatever weapon type/magic type you're interested in. Just as you're passing, while exploring, take them out to gain the experience. En route somewhere, slip in a jump now and then to build athleticism. Over time, it all adds up.

Also, get a house for your loot. It wasn't long before I had too much to carry, and it saves you being weighed down.

Haggle in the shops. The more you do this, the more skilled your character gets at bargaining, making shopkeepers more and more susceptible to bigger and bigger discounts as the game proceeds. Very worthwhile.

Note that if you eventually get the dirty disc error, it's not really your disc that's at fault; the cache is just full (fallen bodies, object positions etc.) Sleep in one place for three days and you'll be right as rain.

Also, run in the water, and watch the surface. Nice, innit.

I have it on PC, and have the 2 expansions. Absolutely cained it, and got a top level character, with some nice Daedric amour, rare weapons etc etc

Shame i killed the main characters in it ^_^

                Thanks for all the responses.

I've been reading the manual and some of the forums you guys link to above, and I reckon I've got most of the info I need to create my character.

I think I am going to create either a male Dark Elf or a female Orc (she's better for some types of magicka, based on endurance and willpower) and I'm toying with a class of Witchfinder. I like the female orc for her magic resisitance and physical fighting/armour skills, but the Dark Elf has some pretty good fighting skills and a head start of some of the magicka.

Anyway, I don't intend to cheat but I may ignore the main quest for quite a while until I'm rock 'ard.

Should start this in the next week or two.

                Cheers
