When you plug a laptop into the mains, is the power going in via the battery, or is is powering it itself? Basically - If a battery in a laptop was buggered, and I plugged the laptop into the mains would it work?

depends on the laptop...
some have a seperate power board that the ac/battery power goes through, if it doesnt work on neither it could be this thats at fault,
others have a seperate inlets for power so you can still power the laptop using ac power wether or not the battery is present or broken
