    upgrading pc

    currently have a **** pc its a

    1.4ghz athlon
    512mb ddr pc2100
    64mb gf2 ti

and was thinking of going to a

    intel Pentium 4 520 "LGA775 Prescott" 2.8GHz (800FSB
    Abit AA8 DURAMAX motherboard
    Corsair 512MB DDR2 XMS2-4200
    MSI RX600XT-TD ATI Radeon X600 XT 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)

will that be ok for a not top end gaming machine but in the middle ?

it worth while going for that or will better stuff come out ?

I'll be blunt: that's a complete waste of money.

      x600 = Radeon9600 = ****e

PCI-E = Waste of time currently.

Either go AGP today, or wait 9-12Months for a PCI-E based system, when you will pick up 6800/x800 GPU based cards at an OK price.

If deffo going PCI-E the X-800 XT PCI-E car is out in Sept. It costs about 330 quid.

It's the card I have to get, due to work giving me a new PC, with P4/PCI-E on it. (Dell Gx280)

It pains me to say, it will offer very little over AGP. As does AGP8x give very little of AGP4X.

If you read the Doom 3 threads in this section everyone is pretty happy with the 9800 Pro from the benchmarks in Doom 3. You should check some of the topics out if you want to gauge what type of system you want.

            This is what I'd get:

            Athlon XP 2500 ?40 2nd hand

650 grams of copper heatsink to overclock 2500xp faster than 3200xp, ?10 2nd hand ebay

Nforce 2 Ultra board with AGP locking ?30 2nd hand

            2 Sticks of 512MB DDR 400 RAM

            Geforce6 6800Ultra ?200 (pricerunner - misprint?)

I doubt you'll find a better system without spending silly money.

Agree 100% If u want to shave off 60 quid take a 9800Pro. But the 12 Pipe 6800 at ?180 on ocUK is a bargain.

yeah it looks good and want it to last abit so think i'll go with the 6800, change the board to a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 or Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, plus a 3200+ and 512mb ddr 400 memory ? that seem reasonable ?

Change the 3200 to a 2500 mobile, (Can be overclocked safely to 3200, as it was designed for low power laptops) then use the extra ?? for another 512MB ram.

You WILL need more than 512MB in the next 6 months.

also its worth getting 2 fast drives and raiding them to decrease loading times in doom.

Already done I got 2 Maxtor drives in Raid 0, I couldn't believe how fast windows loaded when I first got them.

I want to get 2 Western Digital raptors for windows though

That will probably be my next PC purchase after x800 XT
