Ram & Cooling advice please

Alright lads, gimme a few and I'll get some pics going. Basically, in 1700rpm mode (a wee resistor sits inline between fan and fan plug on mobo, supplied with fan) it's immensely quiet. In 2800rpm mode it sounds like concord and doesn't half shift some air. No idea if any of the other 92mil fans are quieter, maybe they have better bearings or sommit.

Best compare their dB ratings etc.

Done some research Stu and it seems like the Zalman is one of the best fans. You can get fans which cool better but they are going to be damn noisey and that defies the point of me getting an Antec Sonata case. Anyone with a Socket A board, chillblast are doing the SLK900 A heatsink, just as good as the newer ones TBH, for ?25 inc VAT. Might get a Zalman fan with it too along with a 120mm Antec intake fan. Can you make an intake and exhaust by flipping it round at all? Also, Stu, how is the setup you have cope with overclocking? I want to make my XP-M 2500 faster than an XP3200 with this setup.

Stepping up to 120mm you can get a Vantec Stealth:

Airflow: 53CFM
Power: 0.96W
Noise: 28dBA
Speed: 1500RPM

Here you go folks, sorry for the compression on these but wanted to keep them big so you could make out the detail.

As you can see, there's an inch clearance between the psu and the zalman fan, plenty of room there. Obviously, the CM 210 is a long case, but you get the idea of where the SP97 will sit in relation to the extent of the board (hopefully), and indeed the 92mil fan on it.

edit - Fifty, a 120mm doesn't fit on the heatsink. It's something like 60, 70 or 92 (ish).

Waz - I haven't had time to fiddle properly. Naturally it fell on its arse at 3000+ with the default 1.65v voltage. I'm reliably told I'm good for ~1.9v with my cooling though, and this processor has been run at 2.2ghz (3200+) by its previous owner using the lesser SLK Thermalright.

Thought whilst I remember, it's been at 2ghz (2800+) powered up non-stop since I mentioned I did it, have had no problems at all. Heh, Sisoft benches her quicker than a 2.8P4, so that's me happy.

Thanks Stu, that clears a few things up. The SP97 (the one you got?) is nice, but I wonder if it offers that much more cooling than the SLK900 heatsink. I am going to go for the same fan you have with some arctic silver 5 paste and see how it goes. If I find I can't get mega clocking then I will get this:

That zalman 92mil, in 2800rpm mode, was nosier than a ?20 cheap as pish beige bollocks PC case. I couldn't believe how loud it was.

Thats nice man, will give good cooling and low sound. Too bad it doesn't fit my board. I have decided on the Thermalright SLK900A and with the same fan as Stu has. THe heatsink is one of the best but the cooling really depends on the fan
