    Formatting/Reinstall

My girlfs mums pc is done in. (possibly due to me...but i'm thinkin it was probly a virus)

Basically the hd needs to be formatted and everything started from scratch.

Am i naive to think i just format the drive from the statup menu (or whatever its called) and then slam in a Windows disc and bingo you have an OS?

Any tips/sites that i can gain some knowledge from?

    Ta.

(you might be able to tell i havent done this before)

what os are you trying to install?

win xp im guessing. if you are installing win xp just insert the cd and it will ask you in the setup do you want to upgrade or new installation. select new installation, after everything is done it will restart and go into a sort of dos setup. it will ask you which partition you want to install it to, you have the selection of formatting and converting the drives to fat32 or ntfs.

also dont forget to back up all important files before doing this. documents, links etc.

i have two partitions on the same hd, one for win xp and the other just for important documents, games etc. just incase win xp ****s up and i have to reinstall everything.

quit to dos and use fdisk (http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1) to remove the dos partition(s). Then reboot the machine with the win98 disc in there and it will do the rest (I think).

If for some reason your cdrom isn't bootable (select cdrom as primary boot device in bios), you will need to make a boot floppy with generic cdrom drivers on it.
