Need a new TV but which one?

hi, in the next month or two, i'll be upgrading my TV i've currently got a 21inch sony 4:3 set. i should hopefully have ?1000 to spend on a new TV, i did want to get a surrond sound system with that money aswell but i've decided to save and extra bit for that. so far i've seen i like this TV-

    PRO's-
just under budget, 32inch screen(maybe to big for my room which is only 12 foot by 12 foot at a guess) does progressive scan(will be good for my xbox and dvd player that you get with it) got 3 scarts(2 RGB ones) dolby 5.1(which would be good until i got a proper one)

    CON's-
Size, it's 100hz(can this be turned off?) thats all i can think of.

and i've also been considering a RPTV.
    this one looks ok-

    PRO's-
    extra 10iches of screen, cheaper.

    CON's-
not sure about playing games on a RPTV because of screen burn, and the logos on sky could be a problem, no progressive scan. size.

so what would you recomend? or are there any other TV's for ?1000 or under that are better than these? is screen burn a real problem or do people make to much of it?

    thanks

I keep recommending it but will do so again...

About 2 months ago I got myself a 32" Loewe Mimo and I have been over the moon woth it. Stunning picture, nice features and well styled. BUY IT!!!

I used to have a 36ZD26 which is like the 32ZP48. It had various options, and although you couldnt turn off 100hz, it could emulate the flicker and sharpness very well.

But you will find that 50hz on a big screen is horrible (unless your one of these lucky peeps who cannot see the flicker)

The Toshiba would be a good choice as it also has a built in Dolby Digital decoder and you get a free dvd player, so would the Loewe Mimo Gareth C recommends it's a beautiful tv. Forget about Rear projection tv's they are "crap" and a large screen rear pro is cheap for a reason, just make sure you do one thing whatever you decide to buy.
Either contact or go into a John Lewis department store, they will price match any price you get and also provide a "free" five year warranty with your tv(they saved me ?1800 on my plasma purchase last year)they certainly sell the Toshiba but i'm not sure about Loewe tv's.
However i'm sure House of Frasier do and they also offer the free five year warranty, whatever you decide to do demo the tv in the flesh yourself and use peoples recommendations as a guide not a definative opinion.

Good luck with what you decide but do some research

My local John Lewis stocks Loewe TVs, so yours might too - they've got an Aventos (basically the same electronics but with less iMac-ish styling) for a smidgeon over a grand in the sale at the moment, too.

thanks guys, i've hread very good things about Loewe TV's but i've allway thought they are very expensive?

we don't have a john lewis store around here i don't think, will check on the website now.

oh and Ion, i can see a tv flicker when it is 50hz only, when we were buying a tv for downstairs i had to make my mum get a 100hz one as the flicker on the 50hz sets would do my head in, 100hz isn't that bad it's just on football matches it gets a bit funny.

will go look for a local john lewis now. just a shame toshiba don't do that tv in a 28inch version as i'm thinking 32might be to big for such a small room?

There might not be a 28ZP model, but there is a 28ZD26. The new 28ZH46 looks the nicest case, but doesn't have the inputs of the ZD.

alot of the later TV's have improved on the Football problem by doing different processing (varies by make), the only other thing i can say is try a LCD.... it will help on the size problem, Although there not that great at football.

I used to have a Thompson 27" LCD and the ghosting on PES3 was only visable on the arrow above the players, and wasnt much anyway (but im very picky)

Yeah, you could get one of those 30" Widescreen LCD TV's over at dabs for a grand!

LCD's are too expensive for my smallish budget. that 28inch tosh looks nice, but no componant are there any 28inch tv's that have got componant inputs?

EDIT do any/all LCD monitors have a VGA or DVI input? i could connect my shuttle PC upto one then and get rid of my 15inch TFT. that would allow me to spend an extra ?100 or so. if they do are they anygood as pc monitors?

                        thanks

Most LCD's have either just VGA or VGA and DVI, ive never seen one without them, effectivly they are Monitors just with scalers and tuner boxes. (normally do res 1280x768 (widescreen) )

There not to everyones liking but there worth trying. Especially if you havnt got much room.

nope not at all, you have more chance of screen burn on CRT. Ghosting is the only problem with LCDs imo, and on most sets i couldnt see any except for on bad feeds and when having rubbish correction features on.
