Router problem - XBOX Live issues!

    Hi all,

Firstly I hope I got the right forum for this thread - whilst technially XBOX Live Q's don't belong here I think the problem lies with the router so it should fall under PC Advice

    Anyhow on with the problem:

At home we've always had a router as part of our network, I've had XBOX live and my PS2 running pefectly online up until recently. A couple of weeks ago we got a new Router (with adsl modem built in) a Netgear DG834, this replaced our original setup of some other brand of router and the classic Alcatel green manta ADSL modem thing.

After the new setup was installed my PS2 works with no issues, however XBOX live is proving most annoying at not working - well it is but it isn't:

I can access the XBOX live menu through dashboard, however when I go into my friends list I usually get an error message - Could not connect to XBOX Live I don't always though perhaps 1 time in 100 it will work ok. It gives me the option to check my network connection, which I do, yet all the checks come back as OK with no problems. This also happens when I go into Account management - again same error but it will work literally 1 time in 100.

I've also tried getting things to work in games but again with very odd results - I managed to find a load of games to join in Toca Race Driver 2 - but didn't join any as I got a message saying my network conditions might effect play.

I've also tried to get the Master Ninja mode thing working in Ninja Gaiden working because I really want to get the Hurricane pack but again with no luck. I get the game to attempt to log on where it tells me it needs a dashboard update to continue, I allow it to get this where it just sits there and after a few seconds tells me that XBOX Live is not responding.

I really don't know what to do to fix this problem, I've tried all week and had no luck at all - everything working fine before the new router so I guess it must be a problem with that?!

Another point of interest is my brother tried his machine to see if it was just a problem on my machine - as soon as he tried to access Live it told him there was a Dash update, which actually downloaded and then he has exactly the same problems as I do?!

Any ideas, thoughts and help most appreciated!

Sorry again if I got the wrong forum for this thread

    Cheers

    Friction.

I actually dont have the same issues as you but just so you know I have the same router (DG834G) and two xboxes connected to it, one with normal cat5 and the other upstairs in my projector room using a me101 wireless ethernet bridge.

Both connect and download fine on XBL, this is with the latest updates... plus I have downloaded the hurricane pack for Ninja Gaiden only yesterday without issue.

I did have problems setting up the me101 initially and have to specify an IP address in the xbox dashboard in order for it to connect to the router correctly though. Usually when I first boot up the xbox it cannot connect and I have to go through the network settings authentication in the dashboard once, then its online fine for the duration.

Dunno if that helps but just so you know.

Also perhaps make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. I upgraded mine about a month ago when a new one was released. Maybe check that, mine worked fine before and after but then its worth a look.

      Thanks for the info.

Seeing as you have the same kit and it all works I figured the problem must lie somewhere else in the network.

As my PS2 works perfectly I did the obvious this as swapping cable, trying my XBOX with the cable that the PS2 uses.

      DOH!

Everything works perfectly first time with no issues whatsoever. Guess I need some more cable!

      Cheers

        Lol.

That is weird... the cable that came in the box with my me101 was faulty as well... noticed immediately and swapped for another cable I knew worked and carried on.

Glad to hear its working now mate.
