Any ways of permanently re-sizing an AVI file?

Reason: I'm creating playable DVDs of all the downloaded Naruto fansubs I have, using Nerovision Express 2. When I watch them on my telly the picture seems slightly larger than the 4:3 mode on my TV, so I am only seeing half the subtitles at the bottom. It's readable, but it's distracting. The TV only allows for horizontal repositioning, not resizing in either direction.

If I could make the picture on the avi file a bit smaller that would be great. I thought maybe it was an NTSC/PAL issue but I'm fairly sure if I re-code them in PAL I'm going to get sound sync issues.

I used Virtual Dub to resize my movies when posting them to my website. It's pretty much the best thing ever, you can change both video and sound independently, using whatever codecs you like. It's great to use, there's no pissing around.

Cheers, I've been experimenting with that... found another site which said changing resolution won't make any difference, as the playback resolution would be the same anyway. The solution is apparently to add black borders around the image.

I've sussed out how to do this in Virtualdub, but it seems I can't do it without re-compressing... which gives me some ropey looking videos. I'm experimenting with various codecs now to see how close I can keep it to the original quality.

Yeah not too sure of the best way to do it without the problems of recompressing. Try using exactly the same codec and rates it was originally encoded with that may be alright?
