A mate of mine has just bought a 5.1 soundcard. It's future-proofing really, as he doesn't have a 5.1 setup yet. I have loaned him an old stereo with a good amp in it so that he can play his stuff through it, and wired up the speakers, then ran the audio out from the 3.5mm jack to two phono in the back of the stereo.
Now, all that is fine, but here's the problem: in the software, it says that you should run regular 2.0 stereo from the 'FRONT SPEAKER' jack on the card (it has jacks for CENTRE/SUB, FRONTS and REARS). I made sure the soundcard's setup was outputting in 2.1 stereo only, but I get no sound when connected to FRONTS. However, I am getting sound from REARS when connected. This is far from perfect, though, as the signal is both weaker than the fronts and is 'echoing' what the fronts are doing (like a pseudo-surround setup).
Any ideas how to stop this being a problem? I can get manufacturer details etc. if you think this is going to be a specific problem with this particular card.
