Specifically the PS2 but relevant to all tray loaders, is it okay to power the machine down with a disc inside and leave it there until the next time the console's used - anyone have any experience of this leading to problems?

I recall reading a warning not to leave discs in the Xbox tray, either in the actual machine manual, or in a game's manual... I don't really buy that though, what harm could it be?

Ive been told **** loads of horror stories about doing thisbut ive never listened. One of the many was if you leave it in the power left in teh circutary could de-magantise the disc rendering it useless. I have no idea what that meant but ivenever had a problem soi chose to ignore stupid people. Another one was the heat left over from the console when sitchedoff could warp the disc. Sounds plausable i gues considering the fan is not spinning any more. What do you think?

You can turn gay from leaving camecube discs in for too long after the machines powered down. I got this from the gaming-age forum.
And, if you put a gamecube disk in a PS2 you can actually get AIDS! There is more info here.www.monkeyaids.com

Demagnetise an optical disc? Oh, that's a doozie!
Of course, you do all know about the devilish little greater-spotted, disc-scratching purple people that sit in-wait for the times when the console is switched off? They even have an agenda: to ensure that a suitable number of Internet users spread vicious rumours regarding 'whatever hated console' eating their discs! Scientists working in dark rooms underground have so far discovered that there are generally three variants (per generation) of the devilish little greater-spotted, disc-scratching purple people that sit in-wait for the times when the console is switched off, differentiated only by the colour of their spots... Recent reports provide evidence of the continued existence of a couple of older, weaker groups living in smaller numbers within eight and sixteen-bit technology. Whilst they may also be harmful to the mind of Homo Sapiens, they are not thought to collude successfully with their technologically-advanced descendants.
We are not safe, people!
