Yesterday, I tried installing Far Cry onto my system, but my D: drive wouldn't recognise the disc, and wanted to essentially lock up the computer whenever I tried. Now, I later found out the disc had a small crack on, which I wasn't overly pleased about.
Today, I've tried running other discs on this drive and it isn't reading any of them. Generally, three things seem to randomly happen.
1) Either the drive completely locks up and won't let me eject the disc I put in after attempting to use it.
2) Either the drive icon in Window's Explorer and My Computer completely disappears.
3) Either the whole PC freezes until I eject the disc.
The strange thing is this... My drive doesn't appear to be reading the discs I put in (CD-Rom/DVD-Rom/audio CD), yet if I place a readable straight DVD, it seems to run (sound-wise) with the picture completely screwed up in Windows Media Player. Now, obviously in terms of hardware the drive is working, being recognised as Atapi DVD-ROM 16xMax in the BIOS, Device Manager and other monitoring programs... Everything is being listed as presently correct and working. However, it doesn't appear to be reading discs, or even recognising them being placed in the drive on most occasions.
I've reset my BIOS configuration to default mode to see if that was the problem, but that hasn't managed to improve anything. Neither has going to System Restore solved this problem within XP.
I don't know the DVD-ROM maker for this drive, and everything I've attempted so far to get the manufactuer listed within Windows and elsewhere simply hasn't worked. XP just lists it as an Atapi DVD-ROM 16xMax and if I attempt to update the drivers, my computer informs me it doesn't need one for this device to work. I've also uninstalled the DVD-ROM from Device Manager and scanned for hardware changes, but it just comes back recognising the Atapi DVD-Rom 16xMax again...
Even more bizarrely, the drive categorisation changed when I attempted to sort this problem out. My DVD-ROM drive used to be I:, but on cleaning the registry and resetting the BIOS, it's since switched to D: drive.
My only other explanation for all this, is that in reading the damaged Far Cry disc, the laser for this drive has in itself been damaged.
Failing that, I was wondering if those who are clued on PC hardware/software might know perhaps where I can obtain a standard DVD-Rom driver of some sort to get this working. I highly doubt there is one considering this drive appears to have been picked up in Windows XP as straight plug-or-play though.
