I'm really thinking of giving it a shot, but there's something like 4 or 5 editions out for the PS2, and I really don't know which is the best of them all. Anyone think the first would be the best choice, or should I go straight for a later one?

Personally I'd go for number 3.
I've got 1, 2, 3 and 4.
2 and 4 are like updates, 1 and 3 contain twice the amount of songs!!
1 is good but its little things that make 3 better. Like getting a medal for completing a song (just so you know what you've done) or the animations on the beats when you get above a combo of 50. Little tweaks like these make for a better experience of the game.

for song's the best come some the 1st one (34 songs) and the anime edition(18 songs), the 3,4 are quite boring with only a few decent tracks (ones from namco games like Klonoa and the classical based ones)
I'm going to get the US version in October with a 2nd drum, just for different set of tracks to drum to.

Taiko No Tatsujin Versions
I only have Taiko No Tatsujin: Atsumare Matsurida Yondaime. "Gathering Festival"
This is a great game, I particularly like the mini game where various japanese dishes are prepared by the dog and eaten by the drum (if you get the rhythm right).
Incidentally there are already five PS2 games despite the confusion in the titles, with Wai Wai Anime Matsuri being released between the one called 3rd (Sandaime) and 4th (yondaime). Anime Matsuri is often sold in a special pack with Appare Sandaime. That would be a good value buy.
*Taiko no Tatsujin
*Taiko no Tatsujin Doki Shinkyoku Darakei no Harumatsuri (spring festival)
*Taiko No Tatsujin: Appare Sandaime
*Taiko No Tatsujin: Wai Wai Anime Matsuri (Animation Festival)
*Taiko No tatsujin: Atsumare! (gather) Matsurida! (a festival!) Yondaime.
This means when the 5th version (godaime?) is released this November there will be 6 altogether!

does anyone know where i can get a track-listing for this particular iteration?
i'm really tempted to give the series a go too, but i think for me the music is really important - i'd much rather be banging along to some ridiculous j-pop that i'd never heard before than some eurobeat or uk/us pop.
