U probably have a low wattage stepdown. Japanese PS2s generally need at least a 50watt stepdown transformer. If your stepdown is less than 50watts (50w or 50VA), then you need to buy a new one.

Yes, it could be that you've killed your step down or your using too low a wattage step down. Use a 50W or higher stepdown, I would recommend over 100W (VA) one as that will work with most consoles.

I unscrewed a hair driver / shaver unit from a hotel once so I could use the shaver plug as a step down, sadly the wattage was too low and the PS2, would come on with the red light and if I turned it on it would go back to the Red light near straight away... Pity...

Ah right cheers guys, MD you are very right looking it at now the max load load for it (VA) is 50w, I will go out and buy a 100W today, anything thing else about the stepdown I need to know like diffrent input/output?

              Cheers.

              And DJ i'm not stupid

Not really, Input 220 to 240V to Output 100V to 120V (the small amount of voltage will not make a jot of difference), 100 Watts will do (or if you want to future proof yourself then get one that is >300 Watts, 1.3KW should do.. )

A note about step downs, it's better to play safe and get a Step down about 20% more powerful then the maximum rated wattage on the console, this is mainly due to the fact that some step downs are rated at a higher wattage that the step down can take for long periods of time. It's like the useless PMPO wattages sometimes give to speakers, these are the wattage the speaker can take for about a second before going pop.

OK, MD, now i'm just a tad bit confused, what should I look for?

                  My stepdown says:

MAX LOAD: 50 VA (I need how much, over 100?)
                  INPUT: 220/240V (is that ok?)
                  OUTPUT: 110/120V (is that ok?)

                  Cheers

Just make sure the Max load is 70(W or VA) or above. 50W is pushing the step down and it's seemed like yours has failed.
