How much would a decent card set me back and what could I get for a 100?

Why would I want to touch one with anyones knob?

      So, in a nutshell.

      - The 9600 looks like good value for money with decent performance, albeit with ati's ropey opengl. (and perhaps nob drivers in general.)

      - A 4600/4800 would be quite decent too, but you'll be pushed to find one.

      - 4200's have crap anisotropic performance.

      - Nob IS the correct spelling.

      - Tom is a pervert.

      Did I miss anything?

At 100 you're still in the same bracket. You may be able to snag a 9700 but it seems in this price range the 9600 is best value.

Found a 9800 core based card here for 95.

A 9600XT is likely to be faster though.

I had a look recently for ?100 gfx cards for someone else and the best 2 I came up with were - 128mb 9600 XT and 128mb 9800 SE both from ebuyer I think (if not try Komplett or Scan). Not sure which is best - I would have gone for the 9600 XT but I did see some benchmarks somewhere showing the 9800 SE beating it slightly - I still reckon the 9600 XT is the best bet.

9800SE is ****ing awful...don't touch with a bargepole. For that, you're better off paying another ?40 and getting a 9800Pro.

Indeedy most SE's are ****e.(some have full bandwidth but in general they're all 9800p rejects)
I'd say he goes for a 9600 of some description. We can't keep upping his budget every 3 pages.

I'd look for a Ti before all that guff though, seems like pissing into the wind as far as required performance goes.

If you know what you're doing those 9600 pros might be well worth it - I believe you can softmod them to 9600 XTs. Otherwise I would go with the XTs as the performance is quite a bit better I believe. The extra memory will not improve game speed (but will improve loading).

Yup. Before I had got my x800Pro, I used to have a 9800SE, and I can attest they're quite awful.

The performance they deliver is only about on par with a 9600, so the 9800-performance tag is misleading in my opinion.

Basically, 9800SE are factory Pro rejects with half the core missing a lot of the time.

Resonance, if you can up your budget to a ?100, then why not wait a couple of months while the 6800 and x800 series are introduced as fully mainstream high-end cards? The 9800Pro should come down in price then.

At the moment, you can pick up a standard 9800Pro for around ?130 if you shop around. It wouldn't surprise me if well before the end of the year, they'll be down to a ?100 or thereabouts.

                        eBay.

Whether you choose to dance with the devil or pay more for a new 9600 is up to the thread starter.

What about waiting for the 6600/X300/X600 - I don't know what exactly the performance will be like but I would assume it would be a definite improvement (I'm certain it will be much better in the 6600s case) given how the 6800/X800s are doubling performance pretty much over 5900/9800s - I believe the 6600 will be released at around ?100 ($140 in the US so ?100 sounds about right over here).

                            Nv 6600 Preview
To re-cap, NVIDIA is introducing two new mainstream video cards based on the same technology used in the GeForce 6800 series. The 6600GT will use GDDR3 while the 6600 will use DDR1 and both differ greatly in clock speeds. The importance of this product cycle is that NVIDIA is scaling down their whole new generational architecture into the mainstream market instead of just re-labeling previous generations.
                            Full article:

It's a possibility if you wanna wait. Althought the AGP rev will come out a bit later than the PCI-e version. Also the release of these cards may push down the prices of the current crop.

No, but I did, so I thought it worth pointing out. A good (i.e. not a 5200) card with all the new shaders on is a bit much for the budget, I thought.

On a related subject, what are the best drivers to use for a Radeon X800 Pro? Mate has just dropped one off for me and its my first ATi card, so is there an alternative to the standard drivers from the ATi website?

Also, is it true I can flash the BIOS to "make" it an XT????
