Whats kinda the average pc specs for pcs these days?

Its been a long time since i've built a pc and my old p3 600 is kinda just on its last legs. So i'm wondering what should i be looking for in todays market, for like a average pc. Ie. processor, hdd, ram, gfx card, sound card half decent addons? Cheers in advance

I would say a mid range P4 or low end A64 or thereabouts, 512mb ram, radeon 9800pro, 200gb hddm dvd burner, Lan and sound on the motherboard.

    sounds about average

Depends how much you want to spend - PC's are very scalable these days.

Sounds about right (when he says mid range P4 I presume about 2.4ghz)

You could get the above system for around 400 quid, if you build it yourself (I should know just built one with a PC with very similar spec to above for a that price range).

          A decent mid range pc?

Athlon64 (Socket 754) 3000, 512mb ram, Radeon 9800 or vanilla Nv6800 along with all the usual guff.

One thing to bear in mind re:athlon is the socket 754's will stop at 3700 (maybe higher depends on demand).

          This means two things:
          1) Your upgrade path, if anyone actually bothers upgrading cpu alone, is limited to s754.
          2) If you do eventually upgrade cpu - when you come to upgrade the cpu you choose will be a lot cheaper.
