    modifying x-arcade for beat em'ups?

I've finally got all the bits to get the thing working and have found the stick rather unresponsive concerning diagonals, esp with pulling off dragonballs! I don't know if the stick is crap or it needs adjusting. If it's the latter, does anyone know how to modify it so it works better?

i've heard the x-arcade is pretty naff for 2d fighters like sf etc

from what i've read, i think the x-arcade uses happ sticks/buttons (www.happcontrols.com). if so, then they're all pretty much identical in terms of their bases, so i don't see why you couldn't replace the stick with another one.

i bought a happ stick (eurojoystick i think it was called) from namco at www.brentelectronic.com and it was pretty nice for my diy joystick. i made one for a mate who says it's one of his favourite sticks for capcom vs snk2 on xbox live (he also has the hori soul calibur 2 stick, the namco ps1 stick and dc sticks)

i'll have a look on the net later on and see what i can conjure up

xarcade use copies of Happ's Competition Pro's. You either like them or loathe them.

Personally i hate them theres far to much travel, there tight as hell and its difficult to pull moves off.

Most people (me inc) swear by Sanwa Sticks , you may need to do a bit of drilling though to fit them in, try asking on the www.shmups.com forum as i know someone on there has done it.

I'm sorry but that X-Arcade stick is apallingly bad. I really dont understand gamers that go on about these joysticks, they are awful. They have far too much travel, diagonals are not clearly defined and they are too stiff - the buttons are complete rubbish aswell.

Blud, if you can return it for a refund I suggest you do so and get yourself something from Hori or modify a Dreamcast stick for the machine in question.

no i can't find anything as such

however, there are two basic types of sanwa stick - the one with a plastic base (for use in an astro city cabinet that only has a thin sheet of metal as the panel, or the one with a metal base that's designed to be inserted in a wooden panel like the x-arcade's

famitsu1 sells them dunno if he has any at the moment, but he was selling one on ebay too (the type you'd need). here's a pic and stuff from ultimarc (who also sell the stick):

it's called the j-stik. dunno if it's made by sanwa or not though, but that's roughly what you're after. as for buttons, i don't know if you can get sanwa buttons for wooden panels (but i bet you can). however, you may be fine with the buttons themselves, and new buttons may just be extra unwarranted expense if you find they're ok anyway

Nevermind, I had a fiddle myself (Ooerr!), and got it working rather well compared to before.

On the astro city the stick is mounted a good 5mm below the plastic top on 2 metal brackets. So the jlf-tp-8y sticks should be the same length on a wooden pannel as it would be on a jap cab, well nearly.
