    Picture compression

    Hiya.

I bought a camera for the london games week, and found out that the size of each picture it takes is very big. each picture is around 150-300kb.

is there any free programs or a way to get it smaller so that it takes up less space on my pda/cf card?

also if anyone knows is there any compression for wmv movies?

    cheers

The camera I have (4 megapixel Nikon 4300) takes pictures that are about 2mb each on the highest quality setting. What size of card do you have, did they bundle a tiny 8mb one in the box with it or something? That's a favorite trick of camera manufacturers.

If you have a program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you can choose File > Save As and change the JPEG quality level in the save box. But that seems a bit pointless, because if you have access to a computer anyway, you could just offload all the pictures you the hard drive.

I got a 128mb CompactFlash card from Amazon.co.uk for about 20-30 pounds, give it a look.

You're welcome, the free version is pretty old now (almost it's tenth birthday), but still very much useful today as ever. ;-)

If you'd like an alternative and have modest editing needs, there's always IrfanView. With a fast loading time and ease of use, it makes a nice picture viewer, too.
