    Surround Sound from normal Sky

    Hallo,

Does anyone know whether the audio Sky send down has Pro-Logic(II) encoding? Seems a bit of a waste to have such good quality vision and all those movie channels and only give two channels foer sound...

    cheers

I think Sky only support DD5.1.

You've only got an analogue, DPL-encoded stereo out on the standard Sky boxes, so that's all you can use. Apparently Sky+ has an optical out that carries DD5.1 for some broadcasts, but I refuse to pay the ?10/month charge to find out.

I'm not aware of any hack you can perform to a normal box to extract the 5.1 bitstream, sorry.

sky+ has DD. PLus if you have sky premium packages you don't have to pay the 10quid
Sky+ is the nuts its enabled me to get the most out of sky.

Cheers Mid, not too bothered about the DD5.1 for watching telly, DPL encoding is fine with me!

PS My Mum and Dad have Sky+, it's grand... until the box breaks... and then breaks again and again and again.

So Neil, have you stuck a larger HD in there yet? I was reading about it over at avforums and it sounded very, very interesting, certainly makes Sky+ look more worthwhile for people like me whose wives insist on videotaping everything and then watching nothing (but don't tape over it!!!!)

I know they waive the ?10 fee if you subscribe to more than one Premium channel, but I don't even have the one of them, just all the non-Premium stuff. The only sports I watch are on Terrestrial already, and I'm not paying for movie channels when I've got a metric shedload of DVDs in the house. Mind you, I'm not overly enamoured with having to pay ?60 for them to come out and plug it in, either...

If I do ever get Sky+, its for pristine recording of Midsomer Murders while I'm watching Top Gear.
