I am after a couple of those External WiFi, externally powered, ethernet port things that means your computer/console thinks its just a cable... any ideas, suggestions?

yea, wireless access points? make sure your router does wireless bridging if its for an xbox. mine didnt so it went back. Netgear are usually safe bets tho

I bought 2 wireless access points and one is set up as the client and the other as a standard access pointComment

yeah i did that too, with two d-link dwl-900ap+ wireless access points.
mind you, i haven't tried encryption as i haven't tried accessing the one set up as a client yet. it worked with xbox live though, and they were ?25 each, compared to ?50+ for a dedicated wireless bridge/gaming adapter
the netgear me102 wireless access point does it too. it also has a usb connection for setting up without needing ethernetComment
