Ok read the manual (the first manual I have read in 3 years ) ! Maybe I should be using trucks or something in the first beginner level?

I will try again later, if I fail anymore I might need someone to step me through exactly what to do .

What difference does it make how big a station is? Does this limit how many carraiges you can have? How do you know how many to add?

      Thanks

I'm still not sure how the basic train signals work.... you get the choice of a pair or a single one which you can place according to direction. But when I place them, they just seem to make the trains stop and then turn around. What am I doing wrong here?

I'm also not sure whether to just play through all the scenarios or to mess about with the create-your-own part. Also, do you guys leave a level as soon as you achieve the goal or do you carry on with the map?

To begin with the maps seem far too large for the goal, its a bit silly really - you have a massive map and all you need to do is setup 1 tram system and leave it running and you complete the scenario.

Anyhow, to the previous poster signals work to allow more than 1 train on a set of track, you do however need alternate routes for them to work, you cant just setup 1 line and put a signal in it!

You need some kind of junction so that the signal will stop the train until the other train has gone past, then it will join.

If you watch the tutorial on setting up a train system it shows you this in action!

Theres a simple way to set up your signals. THere are also single signals but I haven't tried them yet.

I didn't realise that you could have more than one engine on a train. I've just been playing my own scenario to get used to the mechanics of the game and now have an insane amount of money after 15 years (planes actually make a lot or money and are worth the investment when you have the money) and was just replacing some of my rolling stock due to age. I know have the three engined beast I have always dreamed of creating since watching Runaway Train It doesn't seem to have any effect on the overall speed but the bigger trains now get up climbs a lot easier.

When you say planes are worth the money, are you using these for passengers or good?

Ciaran, the best way for doing a railway line like that is to use the one way signals, this way the trains never turn back on themselves and it keeps the network running alot smoother (watch the more intelligent AI characters for tips)

re: the stupidly huge maps for the early scenarios, this is so you can continue developing the network after the scenario is complete, the original didn't have any goals other than make money.

I set up a few Concorde's and 747s going from one side of the map to the other carrying passengers an they were bringin in roughly ?65000 per trip.

At the moment I'm just playing through the scenarios, I have one left on the easy section - the one where you have to transport 50,000 tonnes of oil in 10 years.

I'm still struggling to raise the money to get a big rail network in place quickly enough - meaning the competing companies usually just steam in and quickly get the monopoly on the market.

I've currently got 4 airports with a Boeing 747, 707 and a Concorde going between them with a Hercules delivering the mail. Aircraft are a huge initial outlay with the 747 costing over ?750,000 and the airport itself coming in at ?500,000 so you need to have a good solid income before you start building but the revenue they bring in far outways what a train would and in the long run after faster and overall cheaper to set up.

I notice that the planes can be refitted. Has anyone found a way to do this?

Aye you click on the 2nd tab and the little icon on the right hand bar iirc (on the item pop up box)

There are a few oil wells where you can do a quick road network to easily link them. This not only gets the books balanced but also starts you on ur way to delivering oil then once u've got a solid income, it might take a while to do, but build ur first train link. After that income should go up alot faster, then jus keep building more and more train lines between wells and oil refineries. The more vehicles u have deliverin faster it goes up so don't worry if u've only delivered like 40% by the 6th year, jus make sure u build build build. And it might be worth noting that the longer your company has been running the more money you are allowed to borrow from the bank to help finance the construction of these routes.
