Counter strike, could someone explain this for me?

I recently started playing counter strike online when I got broadband. Previously I have only played over LAN..

I keep getting these messages from the admin of various servers I play on telling me to "sort your rates out or get banned"

What the hell does that mean... as far as I can see I had the lowest ping of anyone on the server??

or are they just being gits?

    any help appreciated...

You need to set a data rate for your connection.

Not sure the commands, I've only done it in Q3 based games. So I may be talking ass.

By 'rates' they are referring to what's commonly known as 'interping' a cheap way of lowering the amount of data sent to and received from the server so that your computer 'makes up' frames. Apparently it can make you much, much more accurate etc. I think.

HP is spot on. This is why I really do dislike much of online gaming. Rather than be nice and explain what the problem is, server admins will just ban you.

The LANs I go to I really enjoy because there's none of this sort of bull**** - online gaming I really do not enjoy that much.

So is there any way I can stop interping if thats what they're moaning about...
I haven't been doing anything deliberate, maybe they were just getting uptight because I was killing them mercilessly

            Thanks for the info anyway

I've just been back on and one of the admin said "999 rate is not funny or clever" and kicked me out

              Same server as before..

anyone recommend a more friendly server?

Interping is a sorry excuse for people being crap tbh - it's about how much you're updating the server, some people see it as an excuse for being fragged too much - just keep trying different servers until you find one that isn't that arsed.

alot of ****ty players say "sort your rates out" when they die, even if your rates are fine. But I think it's beneficial if you do alter your rates according to your connection anyway, default rates are sucky. Basically you want as high rate as possible without getting loss or choke (net_graph 1 <---in console to see loss and choke) the main 3 commands for CS and the settings I use for a 1mb connection are:

                  rate "20000"
                  cl_cmdrate "100"
                  cl_updaterate "85"

you can check what yours are in your config, or type in one of those commands in console and it should auto-fill with your settings.

                    Use
                    Rate 25000
                    cl_cmdrate 101
                    cl_updaterate 101
                    ex_interp 0.05

net_graph 3 will show you your choke and loss.

wow i've never heard of this before (and thus have never been kicked due to rates) and have been playing CS online for two years now, since i was on 115k adsl

mind you, i haven't been playing recently (since before steam came out) and just installed steam and had a few games. no probs with rates or whatever, other than one game where stupid steam was downloading CS while i was playing it!

but i'll take that info you lot have posted and give it a go

Just tried it as you said... and seems to be working.

I can't see any difference myself.

                        Thanks for the help

If other people on the server are also are using decent rates like the ones I suggested, your bullets will "register" more effectively. Most decent leagues enforce minimum rates.
