    indeed

well i'm no designer, so i feel justified in saying that, for my needs (current and possibly future), the one-button design is bothersome, so watching a designer isn't really an argument that holds much weight. What about in the films when the 'hacker' type is asked to do such mundane tasks to pics/videos as 'freeze frame!' 'zoom in!', 'increase quality!' or, in that famous enemy of the state scene, 'rotate the video!' and answers these requests by bashing away at the keyboard? but yes you're right in stating that muddy

in that case, the same thing could be argued about the dos prompt in windows - just watch me (or someone even better) using it and you'll think mouse control (one-button or fifty-button) is slow and cumbersome, but then for 99% of tasks the mouse is easier (especially since windows intro'd long file names - they're a bugger to type!)

and let's not forget that the keyboard has similar uses in conjunction with the mouse in windows, too, and tbh, i'm really adjusting well to the mac's layout as i just use the windows key like i would 'ctrl' on the pc (eg. ctrl-Q on pc to close, winkey-Q on mac)
my friend is gonna give me his mac keyboard and mouse - they're the black/transparent ones, and the mouse is that nifty button-less style. sure, they won't match the machine but heck, they'll look gorgeous on my black desk (compared to my current beige kb and silver mouse!)
i'll need the keyboard more, as the home, end, delete, etc, keys don't appear to be mapped properly.

oh and about the pc keyboard combos, i think our (pc owners) favourite is ctrl-alt-delete

and about the fanboy stuff, well, i work with a bunch of pc fanboys, although only one actually dislikes mac, in a 'dunno why, i just do' kinda way. it's sickening tbh, although ignorance breeds that sort of conclusion, does it not?

it's a good job i've got this laptop with xp on (using it now) or else i may get too used to mac os and then get scared of xp! heaven forbid!

so with that in mind, let me say "I think, therefore I Mac/PC"

oh btw, regarding os x, shall i just stuff a load of ram in there? i'm not too keen on 1024 just yet, but i could do 512 or maybe 768. and kudos to muddy for the link. i'll sort that out when i next get on my mac

oh btw, is file sharing straightforward to do? i may be downloading a lot of stuff on the mac soon, to be used/burnt on my pc, and also may be downloading stuff for my mac, but on this laptop (due to getright and stuff). do i need any special software for the two types (pc and mac) to get it on?

I have an imac with the exact same spec and graphics as yours except it has 1GB of ram. It runs OSX beautifully and once you use it you'll never look as OS9 again. The vast majority of your old apps can be run through OSX's classic mode, though there is likely to be OSX native versions of the progs that run better.

My computer will run everything thrown at it bar new games so you'll have no problems. Just get OSX really, it's top.

As for burning disc as long as you don't burn them as sessions a PC will read it fine. Burn it as sessions and it will only read the 1st session. Toast is the best app.

Limewire is the best file sharing place too and Azareus for torrents.
      http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml and
Download Vuze - Azureus for free. An extremely powerful and configurable BitTorrent client. Vuze (formerly Azureus) is an extremely powerful and configurable BitTorrent client. Search and download torrent files.

thanks for that you've convinced me to switch over. i'm not ~too~ fussed about not using the quartz extreme aspect, but then on my xp machine, i'm using the old win2000 interface anyway as it's faster so i guess it'll be a similar situation
oh and bowser, by same spec do you mean the 300mhz i initially quoted or the 500mhz i actually have?

AND WHERE THE HELL CAN I GET A HEATSINK FOR THE DAMNED THING!?!?? I CANT FIND ONE ANYWHERE! NOT EVEN EBAY!

OSX needs memory more than anything, I'd say 256mb is the bare minimum. If you want PM me about OSX and I can help you get it

Just remembered Toast can also be used to make Mac or Pc only discs as well as ones that will work on both, boot up discs and video discs too. I'd recommend get a fire wire input if possible, SCUSI is a bit limited. If you didn't know either click on the apple in the top left and choose system profiler for a breakdown of what's in your mac.

If you don't care about Quartz Extreme then your PC, like Bowser123 says, will sing if it's got OSX installed and a lot of extra RAM.

Personally I would max the RAM out for best results...

File sharing under OSX is pretty simple... it comes with a service that handles windows file shared seamlessly.

I use my lower end G4 for web browsing, file sharing, office stuff and it's great!

            Hardware Overview:

            Machine Model: Power Mac G4
            CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
            Number Of CPUs: 1
            CPU Speed: 467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
            Memory: 768 MB
            Bus Speed: 133 MHz
            Boot ROM Version: 4.1.8f5
            Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxx
            Type: display
            Bus: AGP
            Slot: SLOT-1
            VRAM (Total): 128 MB
            Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
            Device ID: 0x4966
            Revision ID: 0x0001
            ROM Revision: 113-99703-127

            Display:

            Type: display
            Display Type: CRT
            VRAM (In Use): 128 MB
            Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz
            Depth: 32-bit Color
            Main Display: Yes
            Mirror: Off
            Online: Yes

            ATY,Radeon9000i_B:

            Status: No display connected
I've added stuff like a 7200rpm HD, a DVD burner and now that muddy's shown me a place selling them for a decent price I've ordered a processor upgrade.

It's very much a hobby for me though.... as I mentioned earlier I've got an iBook and a G5 and an inability to not spend money on Mac stuff.

valken, i wasn't jumping to the defense, merely commenting on the easiest target about mac computing. as i go on to say, I use a 4+ M$ button mouse at work

glad the OWC link is good, what are you buying, out of interest?

for a heat sink, try these guys, give them a ring

                  muddy,

no worries... while I'm a Mac user I tend to be quick to judge those who I perceive don't acknowledge their shortcomings. Having reread your posts I can admit that I jumped the gun a little!

I'm gonna get a 900 - 1.2GHz upgrade depending on budget. I'm already happy enough with how my G4 performs so only a minor speed boost is necessary IMO.

I *am* concerned about compatibility issues with a processor upgrade card. There seems to be some questions about sleep mode working correctly with them.
