    Modem/ISP woes.

Humm... I can't connect to the internet.

My PC has been weird with the internet for a while and not connecting, claiming no dial tone and simply just refusing. It says the modem is fine, so I assume it must be my ISP. Would ISP issues explain why it says there is no dial tone when I try to connect? I've plugged my phone in, and there is, so it's not the socket, and I've changed the leads...

I don't know what the issue is and I can't get in contact with my ISP for some reason...

    ...any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers

I think its the modem tbh. ISP issues won't explain no dial tone. The PC saying it is working fine probably just means that it is still being detected and that drivers are installed - it doesn't necessarily mean that it is functioning correctly

You could have picked up one of those dialler programs that just dial one of those premium lines when the computer starts? I'm not sure of the best way to check this to be honest...

Alternatively if you can't contact your ISP then maybe they are having problems - you could try dialling up to a pay as you go service and see if that makes a difference.

looks like you're doing fine there, connection must have worked ok after all or the post won't have shown up

I got a new modem, installed it and it still says no tone when I try to connect... must be my ISP?

Connect a handset to the line and socket on which the modem sits and see if you get a dial tone. Can't think off the top of my head any ISP related problems to cause no dial tone, more likely to be the line itself.

Not suddenly got call waiting recently? Or have messages left on BT answer so the dial tone is altered?

Could be as simple as a dodgy modem cable - mine kept doing the exact same thing and it turned out to be a cracked plug at the phone end which was causing an intermittent contact.

**edit** OOP - sorry, I didn't read your first post thoroughly enough, probably not the cable then!

I've changed the cable already once. I'll try both your suggestions though. I'll change it again and I'll connect to the phone as well... hopefully!

Ok, not I've connected a handset up directly to the modem becuase I haven't got the right shaped cables, but hopefully I'll sort that out. But I tried connecting the phone socket and the line to the same phone line using a splitter and it said the phone line was busy... so that implies that it is trying to do something... but it's not...
