I've got a midly scratched CD that plays perfectly on my CD players, but on the Xbox it crackles madly like the speakers are unplugged. Same when I convert it to a soundtrack. Is this normal? Does the xbox have no error correction for music or something? Do my CD's have to be pristine?

Xbox CD music crackle

It's not copy protected as far as I can tell (no mention on the case and it says "CD compact disc" on the disc - copy protected ones arent allowed to say this). Copy protected discs seem to play fine on my PC anyway - I've had no problems ripping them either. Anyway, that's another story.
It only makes these noises in the last couple of tracks and that's where the scratches are (edge of the disc - thats the last few tracks yeah?). I've tried playing it on my PC again and although it's better, there are still a few pops and crackles.

I bet the drive notices checksum errors, but I bet for speed the Xbox ripping software ignores them (assuming a couple of scratches will only give you a couple of pops).
If the disk is so bad that it causes pops and static throughout the last couple of tracks, throw it away before you damage (or at least shorten the lifespan of) a drive that tries too hard to read it.
What have you been doing with these disks, anyway?
