    Toshiba 32ZP38/36ZP38 Television Help

I've just upgraded to a 32ZP38 Dolby digital widescreen Television and and overall I'm very pleased with it.

However, when playing a US Gamecube through progressive scan if I look very closely at the screen I can make out a fair amount of flicker and interference especially on dark scenes. Also, when playing Gamecube games without progressive scan (in interlace mode) it shows quite bad colour bleed when displaying bright reds, the problem is very bad when 'forced' progressive scan is selected.

Strangely, the picture is perfect when playing DVD's in PAL progressive scan.

Does anyone else with a 32ZP38/36ZP38 experience these problems or do I have a faulty set?

you might have to get an engineer round to calibrate the screen, Im not too sure but this sounds like a problem that a lot of people over @avforums.com have had with their tosh sets. ESP with gamecube PS, its been apparent since Tosh introduced PS with the ZD series. I had tearing issues with SC2 on my PS2 but thats been the only game and its crap anyway.

Had the same problem with my 28" Tosh, all the info you need for sorting it out is in this thread from AVForums - http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66267

These are a common problem with the Toshiba P38 series. You'll find many complaints about these issues over at www.avforums.com

Hitcher, thanks for the link. I had a Toshiba 28ZD26P before the 32ZP38 and it displayed screen-tearing when running Gamecube games in progressive scan. I contacted Toshiba and they sent an engineer over to fix it.

The problems with the new set ( 32ZP38 ) are not listed in the link. When playing teh gamecube in progressive scan there is no screen-tearing, but there is a faint series of diagonal lines running across the screen on dark scenes, it is at it's most noticeable when the Gamecube is 'between' displaying images (in other words fading out of one image before changing to another) and I think maybe it is interference from the Gamecube?

I did a search on avforums but it came up with too many matches for me to read.

did you buy this set from new recently? if so i thought this problem would have been fixed from the factory by now. anyway, the interference is caused by a capacitor at location C898 which is of a lower rating than it should be. the capacitor need to be replaced with a higher rated one. toshiba know all about this fix so give them a call and tell them exactly what the problem is and they should come out and fix it. don't let them fob you off with "we've not heard of this before" because they definitely have! i got them to come and sort mine a few months ago.

shortround: thanks for that piece of information, I'll get onto it right away.

Tell me, did yours also have a problem with colour-bleed?

no, mine is pretty spot on with colours. this is something which should be fixable in the service menu though. the only problem is that most tv engineers haven't got a frickin clue what they're on about, so finding someone with the know how to fix it at a reasonable price is a bit tricky. the only way to be sure of a decent calibration is to get it ISF calibrated, but this costs a bomb, so it depends whether it bothers you that much and you have the dough spare!

I've been into the service menu to correct all the usual geometry issues that most televisions suffer from. I know where to change the values for RED, GREEN and BLUE but I read on avforums not to fiddle with these as it could damage the set.

I'll ask the engineer about it when he comes to fit the capacitor. I was very pleased with the engineer Toshiba sent over to fix my last TV - he seemed very knowledgable and even repaired my faulty DVD player for a sly tenner in his back pocket.

                    Cheers for everyone's advice.
