Battlefield Nam & SW: Battlefront are quitting

Both these games (and I suspect BF 1942) are quitting back to the desktop, but only in single player mode. I can happily play online for hours with either game, but just not offline (which I need to do to practice).

I know that Star Wars BF installs the latest DirectX - could that be a problem? Doom 3 and Unreal 2k4 etc all work fine. My operating system is Windows 2000.

Can anyone help me out here?

Have you tried different versions of your graphics driver?

Freaky, I get exactly the opposite with Battlefield Nam at the moment, whatever I do it quits after playing online for a while.

Desert Combat was notorious for this. Nobody ever seems to do anything about it. This leads me to suspect that it's probably BF1942 can't handle mods too well.

But what would make it differentiate between online and offline? Surely it's the same game engine, program code etc?

I get 1942 quitting out everytime if I have my 2500+ overclocked to 3200+. Thing is, everything else works fine and the tempreture is more than fine.

I think it's just the crap programming of the 1942 engine.

[Fanboy mode]Leave the DC alone[/Fanboy Mode]

I have had problems with 1942 before, but with the last patch added it seems to be fine. I haven't crashed for months, and I play it nearly everyday.

Vietnam is a bit rubbish mind. The music doesn't even play on the title screen, so I'm not surprised.

Original poster mentions SW:B... is it based on the BF1942 code/engine?

I have BF Nam - I'm just incredibly **** at it, that's why I need the off line mode to practice!

                        Yeah fairly.

Go to the ATI or nvidia site and you'll see that as well as the latest drivers they also list older versions. Some driver versions have some/more problems with some games: a quick goodle and general Internet hunt will usually help ascertain the drivers people are having the best luck with for a given game. But it can be a bit hit and miss / trial and error. Oh if you don't have the latest drivers installed probably makes sense to try the latest ones first.

Anyhoo once you've downloaded different drivers go to the Add/Remove programs thing and if you have (for example) an ATI card you'll see the ATI drivers listed. Uninstall them and your system will reboot. Install the ones you downloaded... try the game! Sometimes its worth reinstalling DirectX after the drivers. You don't uninstall DX... just install it again.

Good luck. Welcome to the fantastic (ahem) world of PC gaming.

I've been lucky and not had too many problems lately and I think its worth perservering with as a platform as there are some experiences best suited and/or only available to the PC. Much like any other gaming platform...
