    Xbox newbie needs help...

got my xbox yesterday.. opened it up and found out what version it is a 1.4..

i'm gonna order a modchip today and have a couple of questions:

i'm looking at the x-bit and wanted to know if i run Virtual PC will the mac see the xbox when I connect it via usb? [if not can someone reccomend a different modchip - has to be a non-solder option]

if i get a different chip, can I burn bios to flash the chip with on a mac?

    thanks

Can you buy Xbox modchips that you can just plug in? Without having to send it away or anything?

Excuse me if I get any terminology wrong , I don't really know about this stuff!

yeah, but you still have to open up the xbox, take out the dvd drive and hard disk, then screw the chip in and plug the connections in, no biggie though

the chips I know of which are considered good are:

            Xenium ICE
            Xecuter 2.6
            X-bit 1.5

Xenium ICE and Xecuter 2.6 both need the Xapter Solderless adapter, the X-bit 1.5 comes with 3 options for install one of which is solderless and in my opinion the easiest, plus X-Bit has a usb connection, so thats why I went for that one, but as i've found out as long as you flash the chip with good bios the Xbox will kick ass!.. I think the Xecuter is the most popular chip to be honest..

I also found out that these 2 bios are good ones to get the ball rolling: X2 4983.06 and EvolutionX 3935.. hope that helps.. cuz thats about the limit of my Xbox knowledge as i've only had it for 2 days.. hehe

I think you'll find Evolution X 3935 is the dash version. Their BIOS version are in the format D6, M7, M8 etc. but you're right, they are the most popular

hang on.. i've just double checked.. i've installed these on the chip:

                  EvoxM7.bin
                  EvoxM7_ef.bin
                  x2_4983.06.bin
                  x2_4983.67.bin

                  have i missed something?

Well it depends on how you want to setup your HD if you put a >120Gb drive in.
If you want one large F: then use .06 if over 127Gb to use G: then .67.
You can also make these changes to M7/8 using XBtool.
The ef is eject fix on the M7.

so are any of these redundant?..

i've only had the xbox 2 days, so not bought a 120gb HD yet.... but I will asap!

anything else I should throw on there?

sorted this out now... dodgy bios, copied the replacement bios from a friends xbox and X2 and EvoX are both working.. now to buy a bigger HD and start getting goodies on there
