    What difference does OEM make...

i.e. Windows XP Home retail and Windows XP Home OEM version? The OEM version can be had for around ?100 less, but I can't work out what the difference is.

OEM should only be supplied with either a new PC or select parts (i think that includes Processors and Harddrives). Anyone suppling OEM on its own is probably breaking the M$ licensing agreement.

/edit. Just had a quick look at the CCL website and the quote on oem software is:

    Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (OEM)
OEM software is only available with new systems or selected hardware purchases (CPU, HDD OR M/B)

Thing is, you can get the OEM version for about ?50 on eBay (including a small piece of hardware, so as not to break the OEM rules). Am I going to run into problems with Microsoft when I try to activate it?

You can only get product support from the manufacturer of the system the OEM was pre-installed on rather than the developer. Apart from that they are the same.

Don't expect a nice shiny manual or box with an OEM version of anything. Thats the difference.

It is not illegal to buy, sell or install OEM software on your system.

I think as long as you get the media and licence key you'll be fine.

So I could buy OEM, install as usual, and get my activation code from Microsoft?
