    Replacing My Xbox THOMSON drive

My THOMSON drive is nearly dead and I need to replace it.

Can I replace it with a Phillips?

I looked on Ebay and it seems the best deals are for Phillips drives. The Samsung ones are expensive, and seeing that my XB isn't chipped I don't think I need one.

I also noticed a guy selling new THOMSON drives made in 2003. Are these better than the original models, or garbage?

A guy has offered me a mint Phillips drive from a Crystal Xbox for ?40, but it hasn't got the facia, can I take it of my THOMSON and put it on the Phillips?

I have probably missed something, all help appreciated!

the facia just slots off yes (with a bit of pressure from underneath), i would get your mates for ?40, good price for that it is!

      Kingston,
Sorry for hijacking your thread but you may already know this or want to know.
I too am replacing my Thomson drive, with another one. What scredriver do i need to unscrew the drive from the black plastic inner casing on the xbox?
I went to Maplin and purchased the wrong size Torc drivers.
I'm desperate to get back to OR2 via xbox live. My old Thomson will not load the game. I'm missing out on all the time trial goodness.
Again sorry for butting in but i thought it was pointless to start a new thread.

      cheers

torx 10 and torx 20 I think are the correct bits you need to open the xbox, the 10 is the one that unscrews the hd and drive...

you need torc 10 to remove drive and torc 20 to undo case of xbox, maplins sell a little screwdriver thingy with 6 torc in it for ?4.99 (it's bright orange) - this has the ones you want

Thanks to both of you. I think the ?4.99 set was sold out in the Birmingham store (city centre) I need to exchange the set i've got, hopefully they will have some come back in. If not is there any other store that could be recommended please.

            cheers

Thanks for the info on what tools I need.

The supposed friend has now sold his drive I have found a second hand one though, but it may end-up costing too much.

Does anyone know where I can get a new one for a good price???

mmm....?40 for a dvd drive or ?99 for new box, controller and maybe a game +warranty.
Maybe even trade it in for a new one and save even more.
                  I know what I'd do

Smouty, how much can I get for my XB if I trade it in?

Also, are there any good deals available from anywhere, all I have seen is crappy stuff like get ?5 off a game etc...

?40 for a philips drive? hmm i would have thought they'd go down in price (i sold mine very early last year for the same price)

if you're not fussed about what drive you have, a brand new thomson will set you back ?30 from consoleplus.co.uk so that should last you a while

and yes you can swap out your drive for any other make/model (thomson/philips/samsung)
