I am from the US, my girlfriend is from Thailand, and we live in Italy. I don't know the least expensive way to do this, but we are both broke-ass students and we love PS2. I know Italy is PAL b/g? Thailand is PAL b and the US is NTSC, and I would imagine that we might end up wanting to play games from the UK or Japan... does that make a difference as well? I am pretty sure that I know someone with experience that can put a chip in and not **** it up, which would get rid of the installation costs, but even so I can't figure out which chip I should get or if I should get a PAL b/g or PAL b or NTSC PS2. Also are the NTSC Japan and US consoles different? Thanks for the advice

If you are going to chip it then it really does not matter what machine you buy, they will all output 50hz or 60hz depending on the region of the game.
While in Italy you could use a scart cable, around euro 5, and when/if you return to the states you can use component.
Have you got loads of games already from the states you need to play?
If not and you are going to play games from Thailand, Italia and UK then you may be best to buy a Pal PS2, or even better the new PStwo, as this uses an external power supply, that way when you get home you can buy a cheap second power supply from EBgames for around $10 that will work on the US 110v.
The Pal I/B/G etc. differences are just the sound carrier and only affect RF input, and I do hope you will not be plugging it in via the aerial
