    VGA DO or DO NOT!

    Hello,

I have an issue with my television which i run my Pal GC and Pal moded Xbox thru. its taking up too much space in my gaming shoebox of a bedroom.

I have a nice 19" PC Monitor that i run my ps2 and dreamcast thru.

My question is what xbox/GC vga boxes do i need to get the best picture for my consoles?

im looking at the follwing boxes on consoleplus.co.uk

    1) Progressive Scan Component VGA Box
    2) Multi Purpose XGA Magic Box

    link http://www.consoleplus.co.uk/index.php?cPath=126_129

any other recomendations? anyone got these beasts?

    Let me know

If you have a NTSC cube then some of the games will support progressive scan and you can run them straight through the monitor using a modified VGA cable.

I don't really now what the best product would be, it depends on how you want to connect your consoles up......

The option that i'm currently upgrading to is outputting the consoles to a capture card, upscaling it using dscaler, then output to monitor. This is not a cheap option though!!

Are there any dedicated PS2 adapters that come in a bit cheaper than ?35? I saw one a while back but it confused me with talk of an adapter disc and not all games being compatible...

Don't bother, all that processing is going to degrade the PQ.

What happens when you run a non-progressive scan game thru a progressive scan box?

Depends whether the prog box does de-interlacing or not.

If the box doesn't deinterlace, and the display doesn't do interlaced, you'll get no picture.

But then, what do you mean by a prog box?

I've searched and searched on this and there's a million topics, but not one single answer. It's very frustrating. It always goes off on a tangent about capture cards and $180 transcoders.

I can't believe there isn't a PS2 VGA adapter that doesn't output an acceptable picture.

The answer is a VGA switch box from somewhere like Maplins and various adapters for each console...

                  For the Xbox: http://www.x2vga.com
                  For the GC: http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/gc/vgacable.htm
For the PS2: ? I dunno... mine just sits in the corner running Linux and came with a VGA cable. Dunno if it works with games though

This will allow you to play progressive games only via VGA, so it means stuff like Tales of Symphonia and Harvest Moon won't work but I use a TV for those.

best used with RGB inputs from a Sweetspot capture card (PDI deluxe in the US), although i've heard S-video is pretty impressive.

If you've already got a capture card give it a try. Teh advantage is that all games will work, and PQ isn't degraded like someone above said. Dscaler basically deinterlaces the picture and displays it at a higher resolution.

But I've been told told that not all Xbox games support progressive scan.

The vast majority of Xbox games support prog scan (even pal games, when pal machines don't support prog scan).

The x2vga box has the best rep:

but the one you've found there would work with other prog scan component video sources.

Is there anywhere in the UK that sells the X2VGA?
