Best option for outputting progressive scan on X-Box?

Hello all, as PES4 is coming to X-Box and I want a cheap media centre for my bedroom, I have ordered a PAL modded X-Box.

My LCD TV has the following inputs: component (progressive), VGA, DVI, RGB, S-Video and composite. It supports progressive scan: 480i, 576i, 480p, 720p, 1080i.

I intend to switch the video to NTSC. I don't have internet so Live! is not an issue.

    1. Which of these should I get in order to enjoy progressive scan?

    Neoya X2VGA:

    2. With the X2VGA, I'm not sure what you actually connect into it? The standard X-Box lead, or do I need to purchase another lead? If anyone has a PAL modded Xbox outputting via the X2VGA I'd appreciate any feedback.

    3. Whilst I'm at it, it'd be great if I could do DVDs in progressive - can the X-Box do this? I read 480p was disabled*. Can it be re-enabled, and via which software?

    * From x2vga's FAQ:

Does X2VGA+ support DVD display in the Xbox?
The Xbox console can only display DVD's in 480i mode (480p mode is disabled by Microsoft); therefore, it is not suitable to use X2VGA+ together with Xbox when you want to play DVD's. (We know that some users can play DVD's in 480p mode with X2VGA+ through some modifications on the Xbox console. However, we don't suggest in doing this way.)
Ultimately, I'm looking for the best visual quality.

Cheers for reading and any potential advice!

Switch it to NTSC, get the official Microsoft component lead. It's that simple, don't worry about your other Qs 'cos it'll all work fine

Cheers - so .. you sure? forget about the VGA? I didn't think it'd be that simple

Also, just done some Googling and cannot find the official component lead ... where from?

      Cheers

You can either use DVDx (an app DVD player that uses the controller instead of the official remote) and prog scan patch it, or (if you want to use a remote like me) you can prog scan and multi-region patch the Xbox's default.xbe.

How do you prog-scan patch DVDx?

Confusing as hell. I have EvoX, do I need to patch DVDx? And do I also need to patch the dashboard and do all that copying of xbe and renaming of ini files? And I don't have any idea if I have DVDx-1 or DVDx-2...

you'll know if you have dvdx-2 because you have it

dvdx1 is oooold, and wasn't a program as such - it would just patch the ms dash but it was never updated and thus only works with the really early ms dashes

the xbox dvd region free program is better as it patches the actual xbox dash (it's better to copy your C drive to another folder, and patch that, that way if your dash gets updated via live one day, it won't wipe over the multiregion patch)

dvdx2 is a program, it says dvdx2 when you run it. and it uses the joypad. it's the only prog on the xbox that does this btw (not counting media player)

Billy's right, if you've got DVDx that's all you need to edit if you don't mind using the controller to navigate the DVD.

Other comments on that thread imply it doesn't work with PAL systems, and one guy managed to trash his xbox.

Well my Xbox is a PAL one and it worked for me.

I patched the xboxdash.xbe (after making a copy and renaming it dvd.xbe) with the multi-region patcher and then hex edited it to run in prog scan when it detects the Hi-Def cable and then got Evo-X (and my other dashboards) to point it for playing DVDs.

I can do the editing side of thing for you if you want - just PM me and we'll work it out.

If I change the video mode to NTSC with the enigmah videomode switcher do I have to have the component cables plugged in before it will even let me see the progressive scan options in the normal Xbox dashboard?

Yes, it wont display the 480p, 720p and 1080i options if it doesn't detect the Hi-Def cable.
