Pal cube in exchange for a switched cube??

I currently have a pal gamecube and was thinking of trading it in and get jap/us switched gamecube instead. The reason for this is because i got a new LCD monitor and i was thinking itd be nice to have progressive scan cube games on the monitor.

I've seen xbox games(x2vga) and dreamcast(vga box) games running through the monitor and thought so so of the increase in image quality.

Now, i was wondering if any of you think its worth the hassle and the extra cash to get the cube running on my lcd?

bare in mind id have to sell all my games as their all pal and probably get the VGA cable from golden shop(any alternate option?it cost around ?27). (i do have freeloader but its a hassle to keep changing discs.)

I went down to a local import store and they said theyd take my cube for ?25 and that their selling switched cubes for ?50, is that a good deal anyone?

seeing how the us games cld probably be picked up quite cheaply id guess id be shelling out around ?80 just for the sake of running the cube on the LCD. arghh.... someone please justify my actions!!! :O

    thanks in advance!!!

remember that onyl a few cube games actually support progressive scan, you could count them on your hands

Before you trade, consider the opinions offered in this thread regarding gamecubes and LCD monitors:

Do you run your Gamecube on a TFT monitor?

Verdict: not good at all. Try sticking to CRT unless space is an absolutely crucial factor.

Even then, not sure how you can manage it (as for myself, I lumbered my Cube and a VGA cable down to Tottenham Court Road), actually see an NTSC machine running off a LCD monitor before finally making up your mind.

Your 'acceptance' threshold of the visual quality may vary .... so I don't wanna put you on a total downer!

          Cheers

Games on LCD aint a great idea generally.
Also the output clarity you would see would be on par with the Dreamcast, no better, no worse.

In my opinion only go down this route if you don't have a TV available.

I have a very good LCD, but for games, especially darker ones like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, it looks far worse than a CRT.

I now only use my LCD for web-browsing and stick to CRT for my gaming.

LCD is progressive anyway, it takes all the interlaced signals you put into it and de-interlaces them, therefore it won't make a huge difference. Well not as much as a crt that accepts interlaced.

If you run a pc game on a crt at 640x480 and then up it to 1025x768 there will be a noticable increase in quality, mainly you will see alot less jaggies. Do the same thing on an lcd, plasma, dlp, qualia etc. and it will be less obvious, mainly because you did not have jaggies in the first place.

Don't get me wrong 720x480 (GC progressive) is better than 720x576i (PAL GC) as 576i is only acyually 288 lines of information on the screen at any one time, it shows the even lines of info first and on the next scan it shows the odd lines and repeats this 25 times a second. Where as progressive gives you a full 480 lines in one go 30 times a second, more solid and more info.
An LCD however will take the info from the first 4 frames and start showing it as progressive anyway by working out what it thinks should be in the missing lines of information, some do this quite well while others are ****, giving all sorts of artifacts on screen. (oh and this is why you can get video delay, which shows as lip sync delay)

Other problem with LCD is they can not do black, there is no argument there before anyone starts, they simply can not do it! Black is 0ire, no lcd can show detail below around 10ire and there is info in alot of games at this dark level, which means these are very hard to play.

But I would say yeah, get a US cube, always best to know you have the best
