You really should just have to set the Mac to get ip by dhcp and reboot everything.

You tried connecting to 192.168.1.1? (255.255.255.0)
You are using a straight cable and not a crossover? (some routers wont like a crossover)

I told him to try it with DHCP and he didn't get assigned an IP... take a look back on page one.

Also some routers use 10.x.x.x as the IP range which is what he tried to connect to (prob cos he was told this was the address of the web interface) and Mac ethernet ports are autosensing.

So do we know the router/gateway address at all?

Try 10.0.0.2. Just read a few usenet post referring to this as the routers access ip. (also read is should support dhcp too)

If it's set to respond to broadcast pings he could assign an IP in the 10.0.0.x range and ping 10.0.0.255 and see what replies. I know my router replies to that.

Will be trying it tonight, work's been a bit hectic. I'm gonna take a few Ethernet cables home with me - to make sure its not them. I'll post later.

I seem to have more questions than answers, here goes...
Switching cables has given me these numbers when setting it on DHCP:
                  ip: 10.0.0.11
                  Sub: 255.0.0.0
                  Router: 10.0.0.2
I've tried to get back in to the router and it works, but asks for a password - is this likely to be generic for most routers? Any suggestions on what the password would be?
If I go to internet connect with DHCP on, it dosen't give me the option of selecting Ethernet - just internal modem & because I have no software for it, it dosen't show up in any of the listed modems - any help?

I don't understand your last statement re: dhcp, but well done!

So it looks like the cable was faulty then...

Try a blank password, "1234", "password123", "admin" etc etc...

It's not a modem and it won't show up in Internet Connect... basically the router handles all of internet connection matters and just appears as a network to your Mac.

Internet connect only shows dial up, bluetooth, airport and VPN.

I managed to guess both user name & password!
1 thing I'm having trouble with, when the modem and mac are first turned on, in network, the panel where it has red, amber and green lights next to modem, ethernet etc. It has an amber light next to ethernet, telling me it has an internel ip address and can't connect to internet. Give it a minute or so and it goes green and everything seems to be ok, do I need to do anything about this? What is it?

The amber light in Network status in OSX implies that it can't get an IP from the router...

This happens when you turn off the router and mac each time. The router needs to do it's startup and therefore the router isn't in a position to assign an IP when it's requested.

You're supposed to just leave the router turned on all the time.

Really? Leave it on all the time? It gets quite hot! Cheers for the help Valken, you're a mine of information!
