    RAM upgrade-no effect?

    Hi

I recently upgraded my RAM by 512MB to 768MB (DDR 266, PC2100), however ive not noticed any change in the speed of tasks or anything else. My system has recognised the extra RAM when i check on the system specs but nothing seems to be particularly faster. The RAM was generic and it was the same type as the previous RAM and compatible with my motherboard so i guess that rules out any compatibilty probs. Does it matter which slot u insert the higher RAM card into? Any other ideas?

Well of course it's not going to speed anything up, extra ram will just let you load more into ram, and only speed up tasks that are RAM intesive (e.g. rendering graphics with extremly high res texture maps).

Fitting extra ram modules usualy reaps most benefits in gfx intensive games and applications, more stable frame rates and reduced loading are the most obvious.

You'll find it pages a lot less now.

I bet before it used to thrash the hdd when exiting intensive applications, whereas now I bet it's doing it no problem.

Like everyone else says, it wont actually *speed up* your PC, it'll just make it run more smoothly because it doesn't have to worry about I/O issues as much any more.

If you run a lot of things at once, it makes a big difference, but if you don't multitask then you won't notice it as much, as 512Mb is already pretty reasonable.

Makes a difference in FarCry, as that doesn't quite fit in 512Mb, however.

I noticed a massive jump in loading for far cry.. and other bits and pieces, but i did upgrade from 512 to 1gb.

Makes the latest games run nicer, i'm happy

              you'd see a bigger difference from 512mb to 1gb

what about from 1gb to 2gb?

                is it worth it?

Yeah, Starwars Galaxies might just about load into ram without thrashing the hdd then.

Its pretty pointless at the moment. Give it another year and we might see a difference.

Depends what he does, for games i would agree.

When im messing with RAW images in PS i go over 1gb easily, i used to have 1.5gb and its defi better than the 1gb i currently have.
