Fitting that bloody PS2 ribbon cable

Right. Replacement ribbon cable. PlayStation2. You just have to plug it in don't you? Turns out it's not that bloody simple actually. On the attached (oh so wonderful camera phone) picture, the red arrow points to the ribbon i need to replace. Problem is, I can't reach the bit where it plugs in at the bottom. I'm able to unscrew all the screws on that board, but I'm not sure whether I should unplug that black ribbon (as that is the only way I could remove that board to get underneath), because I don't want it to break like the silver one.

How should i get down to the bit where it plugs in at the bottom? Should I unplug the black ribbon cable? Will it break or not?
