It's often not fair to compare a console game and a PC game. One is usually an interlaced image where as the other is frame by frame.
Zero, you NEED a new GFX card. The 8500 is ****. I managed to dump the 8500LE get a 9800SE and the improvement is amazing. Stunning. That one thing will make a huge difference from my experience.
I personally find with PC games, consistency is more important. If a game runs at 20fps ALL the time then it is fine. If it is 30fps at one point then 5fps the next then it's unplayable. It's what you're used to though...

I have a P4 3.4, 1GB 400MHz DDR, and a 9800XT and I'm playing it at 800x600. Even with an Athlon FX55 and a 6800 Ultra which is the best you can get you can't play Doom 3 at more than 1024x768 at a decent framerate.
ahh...
believe it or not, thats actually good to know cause now im not as paranoid about running doom3 in 1280x1024.
seems like ill be getting a new gfx card.
Does anyone have any idea about the graphics quality between nvidia and ati?
I remember i got the 8500 2 years ago because i heard ATI have better image quality, is that still true? not that i can really tell but its always good to know that im getting the best for what im paying for
frankly speaking im more towards nvidia at the moment no idea why though

nvidia have improved their image quality
If you want to spend ?125, get an ATI 9800Pro
If you want to spend 175 get an nvidia 6800
If you want to spend 250 get a 6800GT (I think you can get them for that now)
If you want to spend ?400 then you have the choice of a better Half-Life2 on the ATi X800XT (theoretically) or a better Doom3 on the nvidia 6800Ultra(proven)
I know which I'd choose but you seem hell bent on playing Doom3 for some bizarre reason
