Does a modded PS2 play import PS1 games?

I only ask because I thought it does. Only I put a US PS1 game into my one tonight and it doesn't boot up, just goes to the browser screen. Tbh I haven't tested it with import PS2 games yet though, so could the chip have something wrong, or maybe it doesn't support it? Hence the asking...

No it doesn't, some do run, but they run messed, but most don't.

Mine certainly does although i guess it could be chip dependant.

You do have to use a different booting method than with an import PS2 game though...don't ask me what cos' i can't remember...i just mess about until they work.

BTW - My unit is chipped with a Messiah 2 i think.

Then you must have a **** chip in your machine mate. Mine runs everything i've thrown at it perfectly apart from the 'Book' version of Ori No Ryori which tells you its needs to be run on a PSOne.

If it's a DMS3 you got installed, you need to hold down the circle button to boot up PS1 games.

my DMS3 machine boots up and plays PS1 games fine. There are glitches, but they're only problem glitches that any PS2 has with PS1 games.

You may have to boot differently. What chip is it?

The bulk of the problem with PS1 on PS2 is nothing to do with the chip at all, most chip related import PS1 issues on a UK PS2 have got to do with the fact that the PS2 in effect is emulating a PS1, doing this around both hardware and video limitations of the PS2 unit. This is why some games just won't run at all (Sony even publish a list of known incompatible PS1 titles, plus certain video modes just run a bit rough - especially where synced audio from NTSC to PAL video output is concerned, as is the case with out-of-sync JPN ryhthm action games on PAL PS2s.)

The guy I bought the silver modded PS2 from said Will did the chippage on it... so mate, what chip were you throwing in them?

(for the record he said he got it around August time)

IIRC, they were Messiah 2's. So yeah, as Yoshimoto says, there's a different booting method. I'll have a look, but google will do the same job.

EDIT: Found in a random thread, from a fellow forum member:

You have to press and hold 'power/reset' button until its on standby. Then press and hold 'power/reset' until the blue light on the open button comes on, then let go of the 'power/reset' button.

It will stay in PSone/DVD mode until you switch off the PS2 console via the switch at the back of the machine.

Put in PSone disc and turn off machine by power button on front.

Hold power button till eject light comes on, release. Game should boot.

I was almost certainly using a Matrix MXL2, but have used others too.

Yashiro's method above is the right one, excatly, for an MXL2 or a Messiah 2.

Or, the more complex way it appears elsewhere is:

                      - Put the PS2 to Standby mode. ( Red Light )
                      - Press and hold Eject for at least 1 second to open the disc tray.
                      - Insert the PS1 game or DVD movie into the disc tray and press Eject to close the tray.
                      - You can also tap Reset and the PS2 will remain in PS1 mode and boot the game.

If it was a Matrix Infinity, it would auto boot the PS1 game.

If it was a DMS3 it would require you to press and hold a certain button on the pad while you start the machine.

                      Hope that helps!

Well it doesn't auto boot and it doesn't boot whilst holding down a button on the pad, so I'll try the first suggestion you made Will

I got the matrix infinity in mine and there is NOTHING it will not play 'apart from my gamecube stuff'

I have a PAL PS2 modded with a Messiah 1 chip. To load NTSC PS1 games and all region PS1 backups you need to switch the PS2 on from standby by double tapping the power button.

Cheers for all the help guys, but I STILL can't get it to boot!

Will's method just does the same as before (tries to boot, goes to PS2 browse screen) and Yashiro's method gives me a black screen and the sound of the disc trying to start spinning but then stopping. Over and over.

So frankly I'm flummoxed. The chip is working regarding "y'aarrrrr" copies (tested with some a friend has) but I haven't tried import PS2 games yet. Having said that, when I bought the unit, he had ripped DoDonPachi to the HD already (no sign of any disc though) so I'm guessing that means the chip works for imports too okay (as DDP is Japanese only).

Maybe I can bring the damn thing round to you Will to look at when I delivered my faulty PS1? And it isn't the disc btw, I tested it with some PAL PS1 games I have and it does the same thing.
