    Views on Pipex

OK lads, new gaff shortly (I hope), looking for a new ISP. It'll have to be DSL, and looking through the ADSLguide figures etc, Pipex seem to figure highly in the monthly speeds as per usual.

I quite fancy them as, although there is a 12 month contract, install is free. If you cancel, they'll charge you ?58. However, most other ISPs charge you this setup fee up front, so I'm thinking if I go with Pipex, I'll chance the fact that I'll be living in this flat for at least a year and get away with skipping the install fee. If I don't, then I don't think I'm any worse of (if you follow, like).

Obvious line gaffs aside (as has been mentioned here in the PC forum), any major Pros or Cons to Pipex? I assume they don't download cap or throttle any er useful ports?

I think they're great. They've only been down twice in the 2 years or so I've been with them, have good customer support, and really good online support should you need to setup a router with them and you're clueless (though it would be difficult to access their website had you not a net connection now..). They're the cheapest, at least I think so, and have no download limits at all. I'm on their 1 meg service, and it is just as good as when on 512k.

Regarding ports-no idea about anything too technical, but all my online applications work fine, as does Xbox Live.

I am contemplating a new ISP too (with BT's caps being imposed from 2005) and am trying to decide between Pipex and Zen. Does anyone know if Pipex plans to have download caps sometime because I dont really want to cancel soon after I get it.

Superb customer service, technical support and very reliable service itself. You can choose with Pipex whether to go for a limited monthly download at a slightly cheaper price or for unlimited. Can't see any reason why they'd change this any time soon.

I've been using pipex for about a year now and not had any downtime, problems with billing, or any other need to call them for.

            Excellent.

I've had Pipex for around 2 years.

They are a flawless bb isp.

I think my connection as been 3 times in 2 years.

              Pretty cheap too.

I very rarely need to contact them. It's normally when my credit card expires and I need to give them new details.

I got a new pc the other week and was having trouble with the modem. I called Pipex for some advice and 10 minutes later I was online.

Don't ADSLguide also mention +Net as being really good too?

I have had Pipex for 3 years and they have been a it dodgy.

They sometimes fiddle with their servers all the time, causing down time.

The customer support is really really bad. They have a reputation for this, there was even a survey and Pipex came out looking really shoddy.

I have had a major problem with my connection over the past 2 months and it's like trying to get sense out of monkeys at the zoo when I phone for help.

The connection problem I have only happens between 5pm and 12pm. At all other times it is perfect, but thats not acceptable.

Pipex keep telling me its my hardware What hardware only goes wrong at 5pm on the dot every day??? Pipex won't see sense and there's no way they will help sort the problem, it's ridiculous.

I have now joined SUPANET instead, 1meg for 23.99 and 512k uploads. I'm thinking now that leaving Pipex was a good thing.

I reckon you should take a look at SUPANET as well, they are worth considering.

But as we stated in the other thread, that problem doesnt sound like a problem on Pipex's side

Look, " Hardware doesn't go wrong only at 5pm every day "

Look, " Pipex don't give a damn, they won't help solve the problem "

Pipex have proven themselves to be a bunch of monkeys that take your money and then take the piss when problems arise. All I wanted was a solution, but now I have had to join a new isp.

... which turned out to be bollocks too.

Anyway, digging up this old thread. I ordered Pipex on Monday, on Wednesday I had an email confirming that the line would be converted and activated by BT on 7th December. However, yesterday my line went dead for about 10-15mins. Could this possibly have been BT arseing about with the exchange and activating my line? I've never been in the house during a remote DIY install, and I gather it needs to interaction with your house at all, it's all done down the exchange.

Possibly wishful thinking, but I don't have my router handy (lent out) to see if it detects dsl on the line. I haven't actually received my pipex username/pass in the post yet either. Any thoughts, chaps?

Which Pipex service did you pick? Solo 500?

I think I got my login and password about the day before my line was active.

I got my login on the letter that came with the modem - about 3 days after my activation. Very useful - I got no contact from Pipex about what was happening at all and ended up calling them to find out what was going on only to be told that my line was switched on yesterday. Apart from the lack of updates, Pipex were very efficient and since then I've had no problems at all.

BTW, my Pipex activation was done 1 day after they initially stated - BT did their part on the day they quoted.
