Best screen quality (TV, monitor, etc) for gaming?

I have a 26 (or so) inch TV which I use for gaming but I am not really satisfied with the quality. I've been hearing that if you feed the data from a PS2 (or any console) to a VGA monitor you get pretty good results. I've read that XRGB-2 (http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/XRGB-2P2.html) is a good choice, but I'd like to hear from other people if this thing really works as advertised. Do I need a specific kind of monitor? Does it have to be a 640x480 VGA monitor? Can it be 1280x960 or larger, even widescreen? Does a VGA-DVI conversion work?

There are just too many variables, and I'd like some answers.

    Thanks.

As far as I know the best quality you can get from a Standard analogue RGB source is by using an RGB capture card (Sweetspot, PDI Deluxe in the US), then running it through Dscaler and outputting it to a decent CRT monitor. Don't bother with TFT's unless you need the space, a decent 22" monitor pisses over TFT's 3 times the price and half the size.

It'll probably cost you ?500 max including monitor (card is ?170ish). Check out www.avsforum.com and www.avforums.com, they have more information on using HTPC's to scale external sources.

You'll need a fairly decent puter too.....

Have you consider using Plasma TV / Projector to take advantage of Progressive scan display.

Ok, the PCI card option would not be a viable option for me because I don't have a PC. So it looks like it would cost me $1000+... which is going a bit above what I'm willing to spend.

The progressive scan monitor sounds great, but is the quality really that good? What makes them better?

          Thanks for your suggestions.

That TV doesn't have component input:

                Connections
                Rear: 3x SCART sockets (1: RGB-in, AV in/out; 2: RGB-in, S-Video in, AV in/out; 3: S-Video in, AV in)
                Front/Side: 1x A/V input and S-Video input, headphone socket

*Component input compatible with HD 1125i format
they just havn't listed it at the bottom for some reason.
the offical product page has all the info.

don't bother with CRT TVs anymore if you can afford a 42" Plasma display (i recently bought one new for around 1.300 GBP). combined with a good VGA box (i use X2VGA+ for my Xbox) or component video cable you get stunning results with games that support progressive signals! btw: nearly all Xbox games run in 480p.

Silly people for not listing it at the bottom with the other inputs.
