    New Laptop

    Hi everone,

I need a new laptop mainly for uni work, but mayve for some multimedia too. Has to be small, light and have good battery life. I quite like these Apple ibook / powerbooks. anyone got one and have any views? Never used a MAC before, so not sure on them.

    Thanks,

    Waz

My 12" iBook is ace. Never had a single problem with it, and the battery life is usually about six hours. Powerbooks have a shorter battery life, but they are dead sexy and will attract women. However, they will be ugly women.

Another vote for iBook. Fantasic machine for the price.
Very light and has the best battery life of any laptop I know of.
They're so well designed, probably the best laptop keyboard ever.

I had to use a friend's laptop the other week.
Some big horrible windows behemoth that would run for 2 hours on battery on a good day. It was so heavy and the layout was all over the place! >.<.

          What's your budget?
          I've got an IBM T41
          Not cheap though. ?1700ish? {edit - oops. Just checked. It's ?2300. }
Gig of RAM, 1.7 Centrino, 60Gb HD, Radeon 9000 gfx, 14" display native 1400x1050, 2.4kg, 5hr battery, cdrw+dvd, airbag (it detects sudden movements and turns the HD off so you don't lose everything if you drop it), nipple or touchpad navigation (nipple is the way forward - you don't have to keep sweeping your finger across the pad to move all the way across the screen), 1" tall, just over A4 plan.
If you can afford it, I'd recommend an IBM because I'm biased
But they are very robust and well designed.

If that's too large, the X-series is tiny, and very light (I had one before but it was too small really).

12" iBook - nice and powerful now and very cheap for what they are. Once you get used to OS X you'll love it and won't want to go back to the PC. The only downside with Macs is the lack of games, but if this isn't a worry, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I've got a T40 Thinkpad from work and while it's a nice machine it's got **** all on an iBook in terms of ease of use.

There are some good second hand bargains to be had and for a laptop do you really need top spec? I'm using a HP Omnibook 6000, 600mhz, 256mb Ram, 10gb Hdd. Its running XP without any problems. you could probably pick one up for around ?300-350 on ebay. Obviously not ibook styled or priced but you get what you pay for.

Why is the ibook so simple to use? I dont recall having many problems using any windows laptop - can of worms now officially opened.

Hi chaps, it is maninly for uni work and has to be small, light, good battery life and good looking. Not sure wheather the extra money for the powerbook is worthwhile. It's not as if I am using a MAC for games, I have my home PC for that.

I would go for an ibook too, especially if you have a PC too.
I was about to sell my G3 ibook 500hz for ?300 to buy a new vaio, but I came to my senses and have decided to keep it.

PC's are not difficult to use Gingertosser, but it is so nice not to have to worry about getting a virus, or adware or any of that nonsense.

I would not say that the Ibooks are really light though, I was using a Sony Z600, in fact had 2 in a row, now they are light, have a superb screen, and they do everything you need them to, stick Linux on it and you are away.

                      OSX is a doddle.
You'll love it. It does a lot more than winXP can do out of the box (or with crappy add on software). Def go for an iBook. MS Office on OSX is delicious, and the hardware has just recently been revised. Perfect time to buy!

(PS, I can sort you out with plenty of apps. Not warez versions tho! Legitimate lisenced stuffs! )
