    laptop speakers

I need to hook up some decent speakers to my laptop as the tinny sounds Im getting from my mp3s (all at least 192kbps) is driving me nuts!

Any recommendations? Im not too bothered about a sub, but could be swayed. Or am I better off buying a small hifi system and hooking it up to that?

    Opinions wanted guys.

How about a good pair of headphones? Get some Koss PortaPros - about ?35, you can wear them all day and the bass is great without being overpowering...

I got some ?10 speakers from PC World and although first sceptical they actually do a great job. Nice loud music.

If you can stretch to buying a proper music system and hooking it up to that, I'd recommend it. You'll get infinitely better sound. Otherwise, any semi-decent powered speaker set will do you fine. I'd spend about ?30 upwards... They're all around the same level of acceptable sound quality.

Yeah, I got decent headphones but sometimes I just want to fill my room up with music whilst Im surfing, waking up, getting dressed. . . . whatever really!

Im thinking of getting the denon dmc31 or whatever its called with the mission speakers and hooking it up to that. . . . that is if I cnat find a decent pc alternative.

How about a cheap 2nd hand AMP from Richer Sounds and some Eltax Monitor IIIs? Cost you about ?100 and you'll get excellent room-filling/wakey wakey sound.

you can absolutely impossibly not go wrong with any of creatives speakers. Inspire 2.1s or whatever, facking ace. Even my soundwork ones from about 7 years ago are STILL rocking teh world. my next purchase will be the thx editions 7.1 + decoder.

                  one day!

Any pictures of some good ones? tried and tested makes??

Last time I visited Dixons some chinese guy ushered me some chunky plastic ones
                    and said
"they're the only ones we do"

quite contrary to what my friend said he saw going for ?15 early on in the week,
made me walk out pissed off and ready to punch & head-butt walls. ft:

Thats actualy a good idea, but wouldnt they be big? I know those Eltax are a little bulky The reason I like the Denon apart from the sound quality is the size of it, I can easily tuck it on the floor next to my drawer and the mishes are decently sized.

I've got the Eltax Monitor IIIs for my computer and gaming connected to a 10 year old 30wpc Harmon/Kardon 610. The sound kicks the bollocks off any computer speakers I've heard (I've tried those Logitechs and the sub chucks out loads of distorted bass) the IIIs are actually rather bass-y, but nothing intrusive. You need to remember that the bass port fires downwards, so you'll have to use the nice spikes you get with them.

They're so good I bought another pair for the living room and just today bought a pair for my sister!

Funny you should ask about the size, I got some lickle Gale 3010s (?49.99) today so that I can have them sitting on my desk - I'll try them out tonight and tell you what they were like (I also got a Gale Storm 8 sub in case they were tinnier than I expected). They're both going back tomorrow if they're crap.

AMP wise, look around, there are loads of amps in different sizes if you don't want brand new. I'm sure you could stuff a full-sized amp somewhere though!

On a sidenote, it's a shame that there is no community for people wanting good sound on a limited budget. Ask at any audio website and they'll laugh their shrivelled little willies off if you want to spend anything less than a grand the twats.

Yeh, its true. At the end of the day, mp3s are never going to sound as good as original tracks but youd have to have the ears of a frickin owl to tell the difference on a budget setup, esp when you're rushing around doing stuff like I will be.

Trust me, I cant fit a full size anything anywhere in my room, let alone an amp! My floor is filled with trainer boxes and jeans, I cant move without stepping on some nikes or levis!!!

The Gale 3010s are rubbish without a sub (as expected). If you're not after bass, they're well made and have good detail. But I doubt you'll room for a sub in your room.

If you can, get that Denon and the IIIs. The Missions are not well made and don't sound as good.

JBL Creature 2.1 Speakers. Bass box is a little big, but sounds lovely. Speakers look and sound nice. they struggle a little with songs in the vein of Eminem etc but that could be due to where the sound is coming from (Ipod - always struggles with tunes like that)

Cheap, sounds good and looks good - all IMO of course =)
