AV socket blown - need a bit of repair advice.

A good couple of months back I blew the video in socket on my TV i got for Christmas by foolishly thinking I could run a PC through it using a standard composite lead. Audio in still works I think, but running anything through the video socket results in no picture.

My dad seems to think that repairs cost like ?100 even for something as tiny as one socket, but I don't want to leave things broken, so how much would repairs likely cost? Bear in mind i'm a poor student.

    Your Dad's right. It's probably about ?100

The repair/replacement may be cheap. But once you add in the cost of shipping/collection, labour and VAT charges it's going to increase that cost by quite a lot

tbh it might be cheaper to just buy a new TV. What was your old TV?

Screw buying a new one. I've only had this one for like, 9 months.
And if I was going to get it repaired, I'd be the one doing the shipping and collecting. I'd take it to some local TV repair shop.

This is the TV in question. It's a Toshiba VTV 1415. The two sockets in the bottom right of the tv is what i'm talking about - it's the left one that's buggered.

Currently running consoles etc through some Goodmans TV, which is nice and big, but the picture quality is bad. I'm getting white lines across the screen whenever something moves, which is annoying for gaming. Plus the fact that running any PS1 game on it gives a wierd buzzing sound that gives you a headache after about 5 mins.

If it's under a year old then return it as it's still under warranty. You are entitled to a free repair or replacement.

Yes, but because I did the damage, wouldn't this break the warranty? My dad says he still has the reciept and would be prepared to try this anyway. I suppose if I didn't say I damaged it, I could still get free repair.

LMFAO, WTF ARE YOU USING COMPOSITE FOR ANYWAY?!!!

Doesn't your TV have a Scart? They can take composite as well.

Don't tell them you plugged somthing in there that you were not meant to, just take it back and say it stopped working, it would be very difficult for them to prove you damaged it.

take it in for repair, claim the damage was already done.

it may have already been; if your PC has composite video out it should work.

I don't understand how plugging a composite in from a PC could ruin the picture though? Ok so it wouldn't work but it should just go back to normal once you remove the lead from the TV

I think that's what he means. Do you mean Composite as in RCA/Phono? Composite is a video type, not a connector.

Well, I took everyone's advice, got a replacement today. Took me about 6 months, but I finally had the guts to get it replaced. My dad was amazed how easy it was - no questions asked at all, and Curry's let me choose a TV up to the value of ?140, which was how much the old one cost.

Got a real nice flat-screen 14" with DVD built in as opposed to built in video which the other one had. Everything runs fantastically on it - near monitor-quality at 60hz. DVD player is neat too - watched like 5 mins of ROTK on it and the stereo on it is suprisingly decent. Stuff actually runs full screen in 60hz too - I can finally see all the status bars/score in Third Strike on DC.

Thanks to everyone for suggesting. Well chuffed with this.
