FF Tactics no text with Messiah 2

Does anyone know of a way to fix this, I have a PAL chipped PS2 with the Messiah 2 and just got a US FF Tactics, the problem is none of the speech or in game menus are displayed.

Is there a way to fix this, maybe a certain way of booting the PS2 or something.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Do other NTSC games play without problem?

Would you be able to try out your copy of FF Tactics on a modded PS1?

I've just put on my copy in my PS2 (recently modded with Messiah2) and found no problems. The only vaguely similar trouble I've encountered was with (USNTSC) Final Fantasy IV, where some treasure chests would not open - this when I played it on an original Playstation with a boot disk. When I got a modded Playstation the same disk worked without a hitch.

Unfortunately I dont have a PS1 or know anyone with one which plays US games. The only other US games I have are for PS2 and they work fine.

I seem to have fixed it, I enabled the smooth graphics feature in the PS2 settings, now the text appears. Strange that this would make a difference but handy none the less.

The PS1 graphics drivers have been changed in later model PS2s. I have found that games dont work correctly on my Messiah 2 V7 that used to be fine on my Messiah 1 V5. I use a modded PS1 to play my PS1 imports - they are far too fuxx0r on the PS2 - for example.

          Ridge Racer R4-
VERY blocky graphics, lower resolution, track breaks up into strips as it moves.

          Final Fantasy Tactics-
Blocky, low resolution text (text is removed with filter option on), grainy FMV.

FF7 is the same as Tactics - it's blocky with grainy FMV and weird looking text on mine.

It's nothing to do with the modchip - it's the way the newer models run all PS1 stuff.
