    Drowning in the TV sea

Well, here I am getting crushed by a lifetimes worth of TV info. I'm really interested in getting a new flatscreen CRT TV about 28", and i'd really love to see how great this progressive scan is meant to be. I've been on the look out but it's so horrendously confusing to whether they can play all the best things around nowadays.

Now, I have a Gamecube and will proboably get an Xbox soon, and was wondering whether anyone here maybe has a decent TV similar to what i'm interested in?

Argos.co.uk seems to have temporarily chopped its Widescreen TV prices and theres quite a few good looking ones, but then I choke on the info on offer.

I don't like asking this much stuff 'cos it makes me seem like i'm a lazy tw@t but I honestly I am lost here!

Check out Toshiba's 'Strata' range of widescreen televisions. They do progressive scan and 100Hz and are ideal for gaming. You should be able to pick the 28" version up online for under ?500.

Tbh, it's pointless having PS for a less than 28" TV becuase I sincerely doubt you'll be able to see any difference on a CRT...

I didn't want to start another thread on TV's so i've hijacked this one.
What is the 28" Toshiba Model No? I see a lot of people saying get a Toshiba but which one specifically.

            Thanks for your help

Look for either the 28ZD26 or 28ZD26P. However it's no longer being manufactured.

I've recently ordered a JVC HP28P37 - best deal around is at www.allders.com for ?400 inc 5 yr warranty, stand and delivery. Check out threads on www.avforums.com for details about prog scan TVs and specifically the JVC

                  Gossi, Charlaph,

thanks for the info. I've read that the Toshiba TV has a slight humming noise to it but i've seen it for ?350.
I'm checing out the JVC model now.

                  cheers

*edit* Charlaph, i've read loads of threads on the JVC HV28p37. My only concern is what is the analogue picture like? I want a tv that will be slightly future proof (hence wanting prog scan). I will be connecting an Xbox (this is currently done via S-Vdeo) a Panasonic Q (component) a DVD player and a Sony Freeview box. The main use will be for watching tv, then games, and last DVD's.

I'm going to be the other way around, with mostly using it for playing games and watching DVDs. I'll leave the TV watching to the missus. We have Sky anyway so I won't be able to comment on the terrestrial picture - the only thing that won't be hooked up via either RGB or component will be the VCR, and that's only until I get Sky+!

Anyway, Allders are out of stock at the minute, but reckon they should be getting my TV to me within the next 2-3 weeks. I'll post back then, but I shouldn't imagine the TV will look any worse than the majority of CRTs when you turn off or adjust all the picture processing options. As long as the geometry is okay then most TVs nowadays have enough adjustments to allow the user to tune the picture to their liking - although most people on avforums are commenting about the progressive and RGB pictures, nobody has been very vocal about poor quality analogue pictures (which I'm sure they would)

You could always go to the JVC website and have a peek at the manual online to see what adjustments it offers. I had a look a while ago and there seem to be plenty.

One word of warning about the TV though, particularly with respect to import Xbox games playing - it's not 720p compatible. This was almost enough to put me off, but the other features of the TV and the price was enough to make me accept it. There's also a warning about 625p (575p) images looking unnatural - I'll wait and see as nobody on avforums seemed to comment on this.

nonsense. compare a 17" vga monitor to a 17" TV, then get back to us.
