    XBMC help

    Im running XBMC and want to use it to stream media from my PC onto the screen via my Xbox. I used to have this setup using relax and XBMP a while back, but have since installed a new Slayers installation so am starting afresh.

    In a nutshell, my media sits on my G drive of my PC IP 192.168.0.2 under the Media folder, so I have added a share into XBMP config.xml that goes

    <bookmark>
    <name>Media</name>
    <path>G:\[email protected]</path>
    </bookmark>

    Ive shared the root and also the Media folder, yet the XB cannot see it, listing the directory as empty when its not. Im behind a hardware router but dont think this to be the issue, internal traffic is uninhibited it only prevents outside connections coming in. Ive been looking at this so long Ive probably missed some basic thing, if anyone else does this also can you let me know.

    BTW I can FTP to the Xbox, and also the RSS stream works suggesting the XB is seeing the PC and vice versa.

    You should use the following format:

    <bookmark>
    <name>BRIE C:</name>
    <path>smb://<username>:<password>@192.168.50.201/c/</path>
    </bookmark>

    I have a specific user/password for the xbox to see my network PC shares, this is then granted permissions to see the shares. The above would make my share called "c" visible.

    This doesn't require relax to be running.

      I think your problem is XBMC doesn't work with the old version of Relax as the setup of the share is slightly different.

      Grab CCXGUI instead, it's a much nicer stream server and fully compatible with XBMC.

        Thanks marty Ill try that later on - Freqstyle do I have to use another utility - Id of thought XBMC would be capable in itself of being able to stream across my network?

          Marcus, I would only use SMB (windows sharing) for streaming now. This is the officially recommended XBMC protocol. Even if you run LINUX it's built in.

            Yep, that's what I use.
            I'll look tonight at what formats needed for the bookmark if you like.

              SMB user here, too. If you haven't set up a secure share with a username and password for your XBox, you should use this bookmark, Marcus.

              <bookmark>
              <name>Media</name>
              <path>smb://192.168.0.2/g/Media</path>
              </bookmark>

              That should work fine, apparently.

              I had issues (as I'm using XP home) whereby my shares were all on my slave hard disc that I named D: and the XBox just couldn't ever see them. It might have been because I was sharing the root of D:, but it shouldn't have been an issue. To get round it and get smb working, I found that if I mounted the D: drive in a folder on C: then set that folder as a share, everything was tickety-boo. I didn't even have to include the drive letter in the bookmark, either.

              Mind, to mount a HD drive in XP home is another pain in the arse as you have to use disc management instead of computer management... You could probably do it in safe mode, but.....

              This thread >here<, pretty much saved my life when I was trying to get mine working.

                Got it all sorted now, many thanks. Im going to update the media centre to one released on the 15th Nov, seems to be an awful lot of fixes in it.

                  I use CCX as well, a much simpler solution than all this .cfg file buggery.

                    Its quite easy - once you have gotten to correcy syntax. I removed all the bookmarks I wont be needing, and replaced them with direct links to 'movies', 'media' and 'music' and so on so theres no need to flick through directories to find the places I want. I do like XBMC, now I need to work out how to use Kai with it, as Ive had problems with this in the past. The RSS feed is cool and also the weather plugin, does anyone have anything else thats worth putting into it?
