US Gamecubes and stepdowns...now I'm confused?

I thought US (and JPN) cubes didn't need a stepdown because they have an external PSU. So you can just plug the US plug into an 2-pin>3-pin adaptor and it would work fine. Or you could use a UK PSU without any problems.

    But I've just seen this:

and it says you need a stepdown for the US cube? Is the person who wrote this correct?

    Thanks

You can use a UK PSU with a Japanese/US GC mate and it works fine. Or you can use the PSU that comes with it, and a stepdown transformer.

    Either is good.

Yeah it's the voltage going out of the PSU and into the cube that is the same regardless of region - the voltage going IN to the PSU still has to be correct, so a US PSU will need a stepdown or it would blow up.

Ok thanks Makes sense to me now that the input has to match the maximum of the GC's PSU.

When I get a US cube I'll be using a UK PSU so it doesn't matter to me, I was just confused by what I had read

The confusion has crept in recently, due to the fact that the small PS2's external PSU is multi-voltage. The Cube's isn't, so if you don't want to get a UK PSU you will need the stepdown.

Thanks, that's probably what made me think it would work straight out of the box (without a stepdown)
