    dbPoweramp

once installed and setup you simply right click the file you wanna convert etc and select the convert menu.

easiest one I have seen and doesnt throw ads and crap at you.

Sorry, don't think I explained myself properly. I was to be able to edit the length of the tracks, not convert them to another format.

I personally use Cool edit (now Adobe audition) but that isn't free. You could try out Audacity which I've heard recommended in a few places.

I regularly chop the start and end off sound files. I'm not a GUI-hater but I found GUI editting, including Audacity, a bit cumbersome for my task. The solution I found was to use some command-line tools in concert with XMMS or Winamp.

What I do is encode the original into FLAC format. Then I listen to it in XMMS or Winamp and decide exactly where the start and stop are. From there I decode it back to WAV using the --skip and --until commandline arguments. From there I have a correctly editted WAV file that I can encode to MP3, OggVorbis, back to FLAC or even make an audio CD.

Its not for everyone but it works for me
